Welcome aboard Sir.

WSU better build a much bigger trophy case . Cause we're going to need it. smile

My prediction is 8-4 next year. 10-2 the following year. 3rd year 11-1 with a PAC 12 Championship title. 3-0 for Apple cups.

Re: Mike Leach in at WSU ? - 11/30/11 10:00 PM

Unless the Coogs get nine wins this year, or next...they will never see 9 wins with Mike Leach.

Why? Because he'll probably do something more along the lines of winning five or six, then six or eight...and then leaving to a place he'd rather coach.

The only way to avoid that is to find someone who wants to be there because they love WSU...and that, was Paul Wulff...he just wasn't going to ever be a great coach.

Re: Mike Leach in at WSU ? - 11/30/11 11:02 PM

There is nothing in Mike Leach's coaching history that would indicate that he will jump ship after a few years. He spent 10 years in Lubbock Texas and I have no doubt that he could have left a few times in that era. But then again he might, the good news is that if he does it means that the program has been highly competitive and he got an offer he couldn't refuse.

Pretty similar to what is going to happen at the U when Sark jumps to the pros in a couple years.

Leach lost most of the recruiting battles with Oklahoma and Texas but did just fine against them head to head so he should have no problem destroying a Nick Holt defense.

If I'm Coach Sark, I'm suddenly concerned about the Cougs. If I'm Nick Holt, I'm really, really, really, really concerned. In fact, if I'm Nick Holt, I'm guessing my last game with the Huskies will be in the 2012 Apple Cup after Leach's Air Coug offense shreds his defense to the tune of 555 yards and 65 points.

Does he run a spread offense?
Posted by: DBAppraiser

Re: Mike Leach in at WSU ? - 11/30/11 11:48 PM

He runs the Air Raid offense which is an extreme version of the spread offense. Put it this way: Ryan Leaf his best year threw for about 3700 yards. One of Leach's QB's at Tech set the NCAA mark at over 5500 yards passing. It is using the pass to set up the pass.

All the Husky fans here who consistently wear their purple and gold glasses need to stop and think about something: 20 years ago if you had been told that Oregon would be an annual powerhouse in the Pac 10/12 and UW was chasing them to try and recover the lost glory, you would have snickered and said "Yah right, sure, delusional Ducks." Guess what, it happened and now there is a great chance that another program is going to rise to a level that could also threaten UW's manhood.

As far as I know there is no WSU Phil Knight. However, there is Bill Moos who is the father of the UO program and built it with Phil's money. Now he is building the program with Pac12 tv money. It isn't always just the money because Oregon State has been kicking UW's ass for the last ten years and they have less money than the UW does.

The real question is: Which program is gonna achieve that level again? Right now it is a pretty even race. Yah I know the great UW program went 7-6 last year and beat Nebraska and they are going to the Alamo Bowl this year (same bowl they made fun of the Cougs for beating Baylor in the 90's) and when Baylor wins this time, UW will be 7-6 for the second year in a row. Won't be too difficult for WSU to achieve 7-6 or 8-4 next season as as bad as it was this year, they were 1 bad pass (UCLA) and Wulff's lack of balls to go for the TD against Utah to win from achieving 6 wins. So 7 or 8 is very likely next season. You guys? who knows with that defense and no Polk.

David Kopay, alum and gay athlete, donates $1 million to UW's Q Center

Robert Roseth

UW Today

David Kopay, a University of Washington alumnus who was the first American professional team athlete to come out as gay, has pledged $1 million to the UW's Q Center, whose mission is to create an inclusive and celebratory environment for people of all sexual orientations.

"The greatest gift we can give one another is the vision and beauty of life," Kopay says. "I continually hear from people all over the world that my act of coming out especially when I did in 1975 has empowered them in their search for self and to see their vision. Hopefully my million dollar pledge will influence others to support the University and the Q Center continue to help others to do just that."

"David Kopay's generous gift to the Q Center is both an act of forgiveness and a clear directive to the UW regarding the health and well-being of its glbttsqqi [gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, queer, questioning and intersex] students, faculty, and staff ," says Jennifer Self, director of the Q Center. "When David was a student-athlete at the UW in the early 60's, as a gay man, he had nowhere to go for support, affirmation, resources, or safety. That is no longer the case, and thanks in part to him, the Q Center will be here in perpetuity."

Kopay attended the UW from 1961 to 1964; he completed his degree in history in 1966. Kopay became an All-American running back in his senior year, leading the team to the 1964 Rose Bowl as co-captain. He played professional football with the San Francisco 49ers from 1964 to 1967, the Detroit Lions in 1968, the Washington Redskins in 1969-70, the New Orleans Saints in 1971 and the Green Bay Packers in 1972.

In 1975, he gave an interview with the Washington Star in which he acknowledged that he was gay. Kopay was considered a top contender for coaching positions, but he believes he was snubbed because of his sexual orientation.

Since retiring from football and the National Football League, Kopay went to work for his uncle's business, Linoleum City, a leading supplier of flooring to the motion picture and television industries in Hollywood. He has championed rights for gays in front of Congress in 1977, the American Bar Association in 1979, and the American Association of Pediatrics in 1980. His biography, The David Kopay Story, contains his reflections on being the first openly gay formerly professional American team athlete.

Kopay became interested in the Q Center when he read about a gay UW student who had been living in a homeless shelter while attending school; he wanted to ensure that future students, whose families similarly might have turned their back on them, had the appropriate resources for continuing their education. He plans to move back to Seattle to assist the UW and the Seattle community in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender initiatives.

The UW's Q Center was established in 2004. It provides professional support, advocacy and mentoring for students, faculty and staff with lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender concerns. It consults with academic departments in providing a safe and secure environment for such students, and coordinates numerous programs, social organizations and educational initiatives. It is a unit in the Office of Student Life and receives funding through students' Services and Activities Fee, the Office of Student Life, the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, and from gifts. More information is at www.qcenter.washington.edu.

Kopay's gift will be used to create an endowment that will support the activities of the Q Center.

WSU hiring Leach will certainly make things more interesting...and more difficult for UW recruiting. Before UW hired Sark, I seem to recall they had some interest in Leach. Didn't he fly out and take a look at the school or had an interview or something?

While I doubt that WSU will magically become a top 10 team any time soon, I would expect them to certainly be more competitive with Leach at the helm than they have been, which isn't saying a whole lot.

The only thing more disgraceful than a Cooger is some dumbass who lives on the west side, didn't go to WSU, and is a Cooger fan anyway. Those people should be walked out to the back 40 and shot - and then set on fire.

I feel the same way about Husky fans who didn't attend the school like ......... Softy!!!

In the 90's the Alamo bowl was a bottom tier Pac-10 bowl. It is now the number 2 bowl in the Pac-12. Awesome point, thanks for convincing me.

In 1994 the Cougs were 8-4 (5-3 conf) and 4th in the Pac10 while being nationally ranked in both AP and Coaches poll. You guys this year, not so much. Shows where the conference is overall though now. Back then the 4th place team was a top 25 team, this year the 3rd place (really 4th due to USC) is just "average" at best.

I didn't know they busted sod in Quilcene. I thought they just watched the mailbox for their checks to arrive.

Yeah but if you went to WSU you didn't really attend a school so, under your logic, can't be a fan of anything. Not that we care anyway.

He's got a thing for pirates. I think his recent book is entitled, Swing Your Sword. A c00g wrote a book? Wut?
He's a weird fugger and all these crazed c00gs are throwin' in with him.
Can't blame 'em though, they're in WTF mode.

Search on Adam James v. Mike Leach for more skeletons.
Don't know if it's true or not but it definitely left a stain.

A co-worker is a huge Texas Tech fan and back when Leach was coaching there, you would have thought he parted the Red Sea. Because there was a lot of talk in the office during the James vs. Leach scandal, I heard a lot about it. My take on it was Adam James was disgruntled and felt he deserved more playing time (entitlement?) because of his dad (Craig James). James got hurt, Leach sent him to an equipment storage shed with a trainer rather than be on the field in the heat.

Not saying I would have done what Leach did, but he was due some large sums of money per his contract incentives and so rather than pay Leach, TT fired him.
