2014 Mariners Thread - 04/11/14 10:23 PM

For those that care...the 2014 Mariners Thread. There is a little somethin' somethin' different about this year's club. But how much different?

Do they win:

A) 75 or less (last year)
B) 75 - 80
C) 80 - 85
D) 85+

I predict C (3rd in ALW). Somewhere in the 81 - 84 range or a good dozen games better than last year. Possibly option D) and second in the AL West with Cano earning his salary.

What say you?

mariners will crash and burn by july and be in their typical place... the cellar.

if the mariners win a pennant I will offer a years worth of quality bank guiding at the barrier dam and pink salmon next year on the Puyallup.

Cruz - football then baseball. College basketball is third. I played some A & Rookie ball back in the day before I discovered rock n' roll.

You? I'm guessing baseball? grin

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/11/14 11:19 PM

yup baseball number one and will always be. rookie ball? were you drafted? pretty cool, was a ball player myself but that is neither here nor there. anyways, this new crop of talent is pretty special for MLB.
Posted by: NickD90

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/11/14 11:34 PM

No - not drafted, I wasn't that good. I was called up early summer season after my senior year to plug a hole. I did not plug the hole - BUT the road trips were spectacular for an 18 year old kid. grin

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/12/14 02:40 PM

AZL Rookie Brewers for about 1 month (short season, very similar to Single A short season but with worse players like me).

But enough about me....let's talk M's.

How about Felix last night? Dirty & nasty that boy is. If we could get another one of our young pitchers going, we could actually piece together a solid season with Rodney closing and limited injuries.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/12/14 04:26 PM

I'm watching the replay right now and rewinding (I'm bored). He is superb. Flawless. Dominating. Maddox like control but with power. If he can keep both his weight and career pitch count down, he could be one of the best ever. He's already the best today....by far thumbs

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/21/14 01:08 PM

Yes...yes they are. Just giving games away right now. The bullpen is killing us.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/21/14 01:24 PM

True. But it is still baseball and that (for me) beats basketball and football.

Seems like in the last few years the Ms have a couple of long losing streaks while the rest of the season is at or above .500. Wonder why they sem to always hit that black hole.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/21/14 04:55 PM

I watched a mariner game for the 1st time since the 90s. no surprise to outcome of losing to Miami and getting shut out. oh hum another typical summer in the PNW waiting for the 2014 nfl season to arrive.

At least they're consistent.
Posted by: NickD90

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/21/14 08:46 PM

Consistently frustrating. The gaps are obvious. Plug em' damn it.
To start, Cano needs to starting earning his money by getting his average up and the bullpen needs to get its chit together.

Mariners really stunk it up last Tuesday losing a game they should have won. They've been in a downhole spiral ever since.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/21/14 08:58 PM

That was one of the worst losses I've ever seen a Mariner club pull and that's saying a lot. Statistically, it was almost impossible to lose that game, but in true Mariner fashion....they did anyway.

This has been the problem for going on 14 years and is the reason I can't hardly watch anymore. I've seen so many games get flushed its crazy. It's like the Hawks of the 90s. They do it to themselves, and that's why it really hurts.

Those of you who don't have a TV in your office are really missing a game that highlights just how bad the Mariners are.

We're losing 3-0 in the 7th, but we don't look nearly that good.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/23/14 05:38 PM

And...just as I say that we get a walk, Seager has a great at bat and hits a 3-2 pitch into the stands, and we're only down 3-2.

Unfortunately that's plenty of time to make some more bad pitches, bad plays, and bad swings.

Bottom of the 9th and Cano just hit a base hit...no outs, man on. 3-2.

Maybe we'll make this interesting enough so that it's a heartbreaker, not a laugher like the last few.

And...Corey Hart hits another base hit as I'm writing this. Men on 1st and 2nd, no outs.

Fuckkyou, Mariners...you are making me get interested and care about this game...I'm going to be pissed if you fail here.

Justin Smoak at the plate.

The bilge pumps failed on the good ship Mariner years ago.
Time to abandon ship while you have a chance. Hopefully the dancing groundskeepers stay aboard.
The water is getting deeper. Thankfully NFL training camps start in less then three months.

Tonight was an exercise in making a game that was already over...in our favor...exciting at the end. Just about Cooged it...again.

In the entire American League there is only one team behind us, the Houston Astros...we are also the only two teams that have yet to rack up double digit wins. We have 9, they have 7.

This already looks a lot like last year.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/30/14 01:22 PM

After closer schedule inspection, there are only (2) weekday day games on the schedule in later May & June.

Monday May 26th - Angels @ 1:10 pm

Tuesday June 17th - Padres @ 12:40 pm

All other weekday games start at 7pm. There is also the weekend home stands to consider. I am open to all of the above. I know the original thought was to go to a weekday / day game and I'm still cool with that if its best for others schedules. I also have no problem going on the weekend or a weekday evening game.

Right now here's the short list of folks possibly interested:
Jerry, Chuck, Add & Nick. Anyone else?

Rodney looked real good tonight Chuck. We are going to need a good looking Rodney if we hope to turn the corner. With the way the AL West is looking, if we can be .500 at the break - we should be in semi good shape. Still lots of ball between now and then...

Yeah, he was quite sick...not that it's any kind of an excuse, if you're too sick to perform then you get someone else in there to do it, and if you are well enough to play then you are well enough to play well.

Two not so good days in a row for Felix is quite an anomaly...he should be killing it today.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 05/16/14 09:15 AM

Is/was kind of a blood sport. I thought it was pretty good to abandon one team because they always choked for the '62 Dodger choke. As I have aged I have mellowed can now root for the Giants and be glad, for example, when the win the Series.

Never was in Candlestick when it was miserable but did see one game where the shortstop (Gene Michael) chased his hat all the way to the left field fence before catching up with it. Fond memories of afternoon games there.

Willie Mac ended one game with a line drive that went under the big scoreboard out in right. One of the hardest hit balls I've ever seen.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 05/16/14 01:56 PM

I switched earlier in the year and suffered through the Dodger collapse. But, I had 63-66 with Sandy and it doesn't get any better than that.

As long as they have a shred of offense I can watch which they do this year. I know good pitching goes a long way but it's boring year after year watching games with a handful of base hits.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 08/27/14 09:36 PM

Man, did I pick the wrong day to bring the family to Seattle for a ball game. Last week, when I found out Felix was scheduled to pitch, I was pretty psyched. I had decent seats, and I was looking forward to watching the King make a bad team look like a bunch of little leaguers. Imagine my disappointment when I learned that Felix was getting a couple days' extra rest, and I was going to see Erasmo Ramirez instead.

We got to Safeco in the top of the second, just in time to watch Morrison drop the ball that turned into the 3-run double (not blaming Morrison -he made an epic catch later in the game). While I was waiting in line for dogs and drinks, I heard the roar of the crowd in response to Zunino's solo homer, and that restored faith, for all of about five minutes, after which time I heard the collective groan that signaled Odor's grand slam that put the game out of reach before I even got to my seat. There were a couple nice moments in there (Seager's line drive homer in the 9th was as hard as I've seen a baseball hit in person, the bullpen was as advertised (excepting Beimel's rare mistake) and there were some defensive gems turned in. That said, I would have enjoyed it a lot more if the outcome had been in doubt for at least a couple more innings.

Oh, well. Beautiful day in Seattle, and the traffic going home wasn't too bad. Maybe next year....

Dude...you expected the best pitcher in baseball and got the worst on our club...ouch man. I feel you. I went to to see one of Jr's return games and he was expected to play...I was wrong...didn't even take BP. So much for getting to see him in person...even as his career was ending, it would have been a great memory, plus we lost like 9-2 or something lame like that. I have not some bad memories of safeco...as great as it is, it feels like whenever I go, something awful happens or I leave and we come back to beat the rays in the 12th on a slam. I would rather watch them on TV than spend all that cash, but its nice to get to the old ball park every so often. Glad you guys got to go!

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 08/30/14 11:44 AM

It's coming down to the wire. The M's look a bit tired. The last stretch has some serious competition. It's going to be close for that last spot, so we really need to win this series before going back out on the road.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 08/30/14 02:39 PM

yesterday am on radio they were saying the Ms need to be about 19-11 next 30 games--they are 0-1 on that after last night. Did no get to see the game we had a block parrrtay at our house
Posted by: FleaFlickr02

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 08/31/14 10:48 PM

Well, according to how baseball seems to work, the Ms should be due for the slide we're watching this week. Heading into the home stand, they had won a lot more than they had lost of late, which (especially for this team) meant a losing streak was all but inevitable. Good news is that they'll probably get hot going down to the wire. Detroit is due for a little slide soon, so who knows- it might work out in the end.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 09/01/14 10:38 AM

17-10 in August is a slide?
Posted by: FleaFlickr02

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 09/01/14 12:29 PM

Context, JG, context. Not trying to be a negative Nellie. 17-10 in August is outstanding. 2-4 on the current home stand, with two bad losses to possibly the worst team in MLB and a game in which the pitching staff have up 6 home runs (albeit to possibly the best team in MLB) falls short of that standard, IMO. Good to see Iwakuma get the win yesterday. Back on track? Let's hope so.

I guess my point was that the recent "mini-slide" (can I have that term?) is probably more a reflection of the way baseball works than an indication that the Ms are headed down the toilet. When you see Felix, who is having his best year ever, give up 4 jacks (the most in his career), how can you come to any other conclusion? The way I see it, unless they absolutely bomb in September (no reason to expect that to happen), this will have been a successful season. The hell of it is that the rest of the division and the top AL teams in general are playing so well that a team with 90 wins is fairly likely to miss the playoffs, and unfortunately, there's a good chance that team will be the Mariners.

Still in it for sure. Last night would have been perfect if the Tigers hadn't crushed the Indians in the top of the 11th. I think the Ms have a great shot to get the wildcard, but I don't think Detroit's the team they will overtake. The AL Central is weaker than the West, and the Tigers have an equivalent pitching staff to the Ms, plus a lot more power in the lineup. They seem to have awakened from their slumber. The As are looking like the team they're more likely to overtake, IMO, but there's still some ground to be made up there.

M's are only 1 game back after last night's 9th inning heroics. The A's are currently a dumpster fire, so its going to come down to KC and the M's. The M's have a much more favorable remaining schedule than does KC, so they may just make it yet...

10 games to go.

I don't know but to truly coog it we would need to have a multiple game lead and piss it down our leg. The A's must have a few on that roster.

The Tigers are leading KC in the 7th 3-1...if they hold on we move into a tie with KC for the second spot, one game behind the A's for the first spot.

We could beat Houston tonight and be half a game up on KC, and if we do that and the A's lose to the Phillies we will be tied with the A's!

We're not mathematically out of it yet, but that's only because the A's and Royals seem to want to fukk this up as much as we do...but as the days get shorter our chances to sneak in do, too.

I hate to blame it on one guy, because that's never the case, but Iwakuma's implosion over the last month seriously put a dent in our chances. He went from Cy Young contender to six straight bad outings...not average, or less than stellar, but plain ol' bad.

A couple of those starts looking like his midseason form and we would be strolling into the playoffs right now, and if we had Felix, Iwakuma, and Paxton all rolling on all eight cylinders right now I wouldn't want to see us in a seven game series, even if we got there via the second AL wildcard slot.

Well, it was a great season and a bit more than I was hoping for. Going from last season's 71 - 91 record to 83 - 75 with a few games left to play is a great step in the right direction. The M's need to pick up another solid starter in their rotation and at least one more big bat in the off season to really turn the corner next year. Plus they gotta keep that Bull Pen intact (which should happen).

We shall see...

First non-Mariners game I've watched in ages. Kinda' fun. Super impressed with that leaping catch against the wire. That was some super fielding, and had to hurt a bit. Then the wild throw of a walk pitch - first class entertainment there. How does that happen?

My oldest childhood friend was over, and he's a bit baseball crazy. I mentioned that I find it easy to root for SF. He instantly said sure, it makes perfect sense. When we were kids, the Tacoma Giants were a SF farm team. Willie Mays and Willie McCovey were heroes to us. I got Dusty Rhodes autograph on my catcher's mitt along with a few other players I've since forgotten. Rick said he looked up Dusty a few years ago and sent him a baseball. Dusty returned it autographed, along with a photo and a nice letter thanking him for being a devoted fan. Cool stuff.

Everett Giants bring back memories... My HS coach worked for them(admin). Played one game there. Watched a lot of baseball there as a kid.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 10/08/14 07:42 PM

I saw the Tacoma Giants with Willie McCovey, Juan Marichial (sp?) and Gaylord Perry. I guess I have fully cemented my status as an old fart! BTW-Jesus Alou and Gil Girardi were my favorites.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 10/09/14 11:56 AM

Eddie,

That's cool! Marachelle and Perry and more names I just can't remember. I had over half the team roster in autographs on my catcher's mitt. It was my most prized possession, given that I didn't own any fly rods yet. And yeah, that definitely paints us as old farts.

If Kershaw wasn't a bum dodger I would feel bad for the guy. One of the elite pitcher in the game and he can't seal the deal. He seems like a good kid too, other than the fact that he plays for the shittiest team in baseball.

What poetic justice to have 2 wild card teams in the world series. Joe Buck won't have anyone to root for and be a hater, although he will pick the team farthest east to blow and shove his head up their ass. I really don't know how that guy hasn't lost his job, seeing as he is so universally hated.

I'm am a Joe Buck hater of the highest order. That being said I see improvement here. These guys have some chemistry and personality and have been calling the games more down the middle. But I still think Buck is a fair play by play guy at best. If they all could just tone it back a bit with the comments about whatever team they happen to be sucking off at the moment and just let the series tell it's own story it would be a lot better. You don't have to convince anyone that KC is a great team and is battling. You also dont have to keep reminding people of what SF has accomplished. It's like baseball for dummies. Let the people make up their own minds. I'm picking Giants in 6

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 10/30/14 07:55 PM

Yea that was a pretty cool WS!!!

A few random thoughts............

Bumgarner and Russell Wilson were roommates at some top 100 prospects camp in High School. How cool is that.

A-Rod is no longer on suspension. He's only 6 home runs behind Willie Mays. Hopefully he'll set himself on fire but I doubt it. 3 years and 61 million left on his contract. I'll set the over under home runs left in his career post HGH at 2.5. I'll set the over under that A-Rod is complete Douchbag at 100%

If MLB was collage football the Giants would have never one a WS much less 3 of the last 5. I mean we all want to watch the two best teams play for the championship right and we all know that those two teams are St Louis and NY/Boston. Da!

Congrats to KC! Sorta makes you wonder just how close the M's were or how far they could of gone if they had a few more regular season wins.

Damn I miss the Sonics!!!

Joe Buck Yourself. Baseball season never ends for me. I'm following what Sandoval does right now. He's trying to get a 6 year deal. If the Giants can't come to an agreement due to the fact that he has had injuries and weight issues I see him going to a american league team. They can utilize him as DH. But he will never be as loved anywhere as he is in SF. I'm curious to see what Panda would rather have, the big money deal,or a deal that will make him rich, but less money than another deal, but give him a long career where he is revered.

I read a baseball rumor that Big Papi was trying to woo sandoval over to the sox. Sandoval ain't gonna get a 6 year deal from the giants. 3 maybe 4 if he's lucky. We need starting pitching

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 11/13/14 08:01 PM

Heard that the bo sox are all in. Honestly panda is great and all but c'mon, I don't think he is worth what he is asking. Pitcher, catcher, and up the middle is where most of the money should go.

also mike trout and kershaw named mvp for their respective leagues.

I bet you could be the GM for the giants and do a good job Robertf. but anyways, agreed. Posey needs to make the move to the 5 now.

Were you and Bochy talking recently about a move?

They asked him about that last summer and he said it would be possible in the future but he likes him where he is.

Panda leaving could make it more possible, but I doubt it will happen.

yes I am. Aren't you late to meet up with Harbaugh for a pant fitting at walmart?

Who knows. It's hard to follow a team when 'money ball' is involved and moves lots of players each year.

Michael Saunders just got traded to Toronto.
Posted by: Todd

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 12/03/14 08:38 PM

We got back J.A. Happ, a fair to middlin' left handed pitcher.

When Saunders was good, he was good...spent a lot of time being hurt the last season, and I know the organization wasn't too pleased about that. I liked his athleticism, that's for sure, dude could cover some ground in center field...but I think we've got a center fielder now.

After re-signing Seager, getting Cano, and now getting Nelson Cruz...well, hard to complain about "not getting some bats"...decent pitching never hurts.

Fish on...

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 12/07/14 01:37 AM

Donaldson got into a pissing match with Billy Beane towards the end of the season and got traded to Toronto. Story is Donaldson went to Bob Melvin and asked for a day off. Melvin said no problem. Beane saw the lineup card without Donaldson on it and asked Melvin WTF? Beane demanded that Melvin put Donaldson in the lineup, which he did. Beane and Donaldson got into a heated argument and Donaldson obviously lost.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 01/24/15 02:15 PM

Giants signed vogelsong after a visit in Houston that made him 'uncomfortable'. The A's have been quiet after imploding their team this off-season. I wonder what Hollywood beane is up to.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 02/11/15 12:29 PM

Padres should be an interesting team, they have made some good moves in the off-season. The fukthegiants won't win the WS cause it is an odd year. Can't wait for spring training in Arizona!

M's fans would be happy to be over 500. We are still living off the 95' and 01' seasons. Parade Edgar and Buhner around field every season and fans are happier than schit...

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/07/15 06:48 PM

I'm goin' Slo Duc, and saying the M's win 117 and get their first WS tittle!

Then I'm goin' SZ, "book it".

Then, reverting back to reality (jaydee), looking forward to a fun season. Go M's.

Obviously can't go Hank, 'cause unlike the 9ers the M's are not expected to "suk balz"! Not only don't care to, I do not have the time for posting sports blah on a CA fishing board either.

BTW, have a good draft at the end of this month Hankster! Hope the 9ers aren't the ugly duckling of the NFCW for long. Cheers.

Re: 2014 Mariners Thread - 04/09/15 10:31 AM

Go back to the start of this thread and let's play a new game for 2015.

The M's did two games better than my option C prediction last year but still came in 3rd. Not too shabby (cough cough). moose

This year, I'd like to see em' climb one more spot and win 5+ more games.

So with that....

Do the 2015 Mariners win:

A) 75 or less
B) 75 - 80
C) 80 - 85
D) 85+ (87 wins last year, 3rd in ALW)

This year, I predict D. 2nd in the ALW with 90 - 93 wins give or take. Our offense is going to need to step it up to reach 90 wins. Just increasing our seasonal team B.A. by 1/2 single per game with R.I.S.P. would make all the difference in the world.

So what say you Baseball Fans?

Typical Mariner team brings poor relief pitching and no offense.

This team may be above par.
