Best Internet and movie streaming option?

Best Internet and movie streaming option? - 02/06/19 10:21 AM

Living in Lewis county with only a Century Link line the options are limited.
Our current internet is bundled with our phone service.

Currently if only one is using WIFI it works so so.
Typically though at least 3 are on WIFI during those times when the family is idle. Then it sucks A$$. Especially if the adults want to watch a flick while the kids are surfing.

At one time we ran Netflix through the Wii.
That ship has sailed.

I'm interested in getting a good option for internet, movies, YouTube, etc.

Can someone here help point out the bestest, fastest, option to bring my clan up to speed?

He's already said he's on CanNet. IE, two cans strung between a piece of twine.

Ain't no fancy MBPS in 360'er-Land.

MBPS, GBPS, and monorails are more of a Shelbyville and 206'er thing.

Well, when you've got your cans strung out where you need them, open up a web browser of your choice (Chrome, FireFox, Edge, Safari, Opera, etc) and go to Google.com and type in Internet Speed Test.

Do the test. Post your results here for us to judge and comment on. smile

If you see results like this, your network is fine.....or you're living in C-attle with GB ethernet.

Anything up and around 1000MB (GB) is considered Super Fast.
Anything over 100MB is probably considered "Good or Fast"
10-100MB is probably average and considered "meh".
Anything under 10MB is...Oh Dear Sweet Baby Jesus slow.
Anything slower than that and 1990 just called and wants their modem back.

PS. Who's hogging all the damn bandwidith right now????

Re: Best Internet and movie streaming option? - 02/06/19 12:36 PM

i have CL myself, you have to have the right plan...

i have the 20 MBPS plan, and the test shows uploads of 17-20, although my Xbox will sometimes download at 35-55 MBPS...

20 MBPS handles my Xbox running, a Roku TV, and a computer, all fine.... more than that you will start to run into issues...

that plan is 45 a month, plus 10 for the modem, so i pay 55...

the next plan up is 40-80 MBPS, and will run a couple more devices, it is 55 a month, plus the modem at 10 dollars, and i just checked because it said i qualify for the upgrade, they want another 100 dollars as a 1 time payment...

im good, the 20 works fine for what im doing, it even plays 4k and 5k sh!t very clear....

as far as watching, we use an antenna, and it works well, but sometimes has issues during bad weather... its a small antenna tho so...

get a ROKU streaming STICK, dont buy the BOX, you plug it into an HDMI port on your TV, plug it into a power supply, and connect to your internet...

theres something like 200 free live channels on the ROKU app alone, theres also CBS news, NBC news, a bunch of free movie apps, YouTube, Netflix, and apps you can pay for....

if you have a large house, and are having connectivity issues away from the modem if you infact have a decent MBPS rating, consider getting a good wireless router, the CL modems arent that good to begin with, and they force you to use their product.... you can also get a WIFI range extender/signal booster, which helps as well....

the amount of devices you can run on your service, all depends on the amount of MBPS you receive...

to drop your monthly bill down, sh!t can the phone line, if you want a phone line, you can get a Magic Jack, which is around 50 bucks, you get 6 months free, and its 29.99 a year after that... must be hooked up to a computer at all times tho in order to receive service, and if your MBPS is low, the calls get choppy....

if you want to keep your regular phone line, by all means, do so....

Re: Best Internet and movie streaming option? - 02/06/19 12:38 PM

actually i am running more than that, my TV is a 4K Smart TV thats always connected, and i have a Laptop that i connect and watch games while fvckin around on the box....

so 1 ROKU stick, 1 ROKU TV, 1 computer, 1 Xbox, and sometimes a laptop....

i dont have any issues at all....

call CL, see if you qualify for the 40-80 MBPS package (65 dollars a month with modem fee included)...

get a ROKU stick...

done...

(the ROKU stick will only work on 1 TV at a time, if you have a smart TV with ROKU on it, you dont need to buy one... if you want a new TV they are fairly cheap right now, you can get Vizio 65 inch 4K smart TV's for 698, and 70 inch for 798... you can also get 50 inch Insignia 4K HDR TV's for under 300.... you can take the stick to other TV's if you want, but it only works on one at a time)

Hey Paker, dont you have some printers to go fix today???

wdfw, you can check which other service options are available to you with your zip code at https://www.highspeedinternet.com/providers/

report your options back.

Once you get at least a 50MBs service ( I use Frontier fiber 50mb for $50 a month,) get a great wifi router. I use an Ubiquiti Amplifi mesh router, kicks ass. this will give you not only great wifi coverage all over house, but you can dedicate tv's n shizz to one band, and users on phones n shizz to another band.

For TV, I use Amazon Prime with a fire stick on each TV connected to the wifi network, with DirectvNow Streaming services. You only pay the annual Amazon Prime membership fee ( lots of other obviuous perks) and DTVNow is 45-65 a month depending on what you need.

Get Netflix.

You are set. Screw Roku, much better options out there.

Any of you suckers still paying comcast or some other behemoths bundled cable and internet packages are getting ripped off.

Re: Best Internet and movie streaming option? - 02/06/19 03:04 PM

I should add, for TV content this seems to be the best setup for us.

On Amazon prime there are a ton of free movies and shows, and you can rent new releases which charge directly to your amazon account.

DTVNow has many of the local stations, and you can get HBO, STARZ etc cheaper than cable package rates.

Combined with Netflix, and there is more than I would ever care to watch, and we get all the sports channels we need too.

Re: Best Internet and movie streaming option? - 02/06/19 03:15 PM

ive had 2 Roku Tv's for the last 3 years (one the panel went out, Sharp 50 ), and have had nothing but great experiences with Roku...

bought the stick for Christmas, and its 100 percent flawless...

i also have Prime, works good, lots of good shows on it like Bosch and Sneaky Pete...

with Roku you can get HBO, STARZ, ect for monthly payments if you want, you dont need to by a package from a satellite company to do it....

it almost can, and sometimes does get more expensive than just cable...

like for me, 55 a month for internet, 15 for Prime, 15 for Netflix, so thats 85 a month right there... Roku fills the gap with tons of free sh!t, yes, the Firestick can do alot of the same apps, but ive heard of several people that had problems with theirs and connecting, optimizing, ect... i havent had one issue ever...

you can also run KODI enabled devices as well, like Xbox 1 and 360, PS 3 and 4, Wii U, ect... but those are gaming systems and they are only for children i guess....

first off, its SHAWN Kemp... and he was actually trying to buy my friends house on the hill in Renton.... if you drive by the downtown section, and look up on the hill, and see the huge white house, thats his... known him for over 20 years...

second, im not a painter, never was... framing and finish work along with CDR is what ive done... landscaping as well... and some other sh!t....

my dad was the Supe, and pretty much ran sh!t, so you get to meet people... especially when they invite you to their parties and such....

sure, im not best friends with the people, but i interacted with them nearly daily for sometimes up to 2 years... hell i called Linda 5 years ago and she still remembered me, my dad, my mom, and everything that was done... weird....

actually, lol, i probably dont know anyone, just making sh!t up like Gayson the pants pisser says....

or not....

hint, my hobbies are fishing, shooting, tech, stereo equipment, gaming, building sh!t, growing sh!t, and talking sh!t....

Sky Guy,

I don't understand 90% of your post, but we do pay Comcast a lot for a bundled cable and internet (and land line phone at no extra cost), so we're probably getting ripped off. Also have Netflix and Amazon Prime. I can't even program my remote and have Desco (the retailer where I bought the stuff) send out one of their whiz kids to set the damn thing up.

Almost ready to cut out Comcast. Got Sling both Blue and Orange but canceled. Tried Direct TV. Took a look at Hulu. Have ROKU sticks. Now we have Xbox Vue. Looks good. Going to sign up with Clink as they offer high speed internet. There's also a couple of other providers. Changing my email to Gmail. Should save about $200 per month instead of paying Comcast close to $400/mo. Its crazy paying Comcast. Still have a phone line but use cell phones.

Re: Best Internet and movie streaming option? - 02/09/19 03:36 PM

Comcast cable tv has been out of service all day in this community. It's bad enough to pay them outrageous monthly fees, but losing service during the national emergency this six inch snow fall has created is unacceptable. A neighbor has Comcast tv, phone and internet; they're all out. The UW/Arizona State tip off is at 7:00 pm this evening...ESPN.

YOU'RE ON THE CLOCK, COMCAST!

Update: With an hour to spare, the national emergency has ended. Cable service has returned. GO DAWGS!
