So far, the attacks in this escalated sabre rattling (on both sides) have been planned and executed to cause as few human casualties as possible. So far, the score is one dead contractor for one dead general.

Trump just made an (almost) honest claim that the US has achieved energy independence. Add that to our newfound "safety" in the wake of Soulemani's assassination, and you've got a weak, but somewhat plausible argument that it's time to pull our troops out of Iraq. Didn't someone make a campaign promise about something like that? Doesn't that same someone have a re-election campaign running at the moment?

If you throw out the concern that Putin will simply move in where we vacate (which is real and significant), I'm all for pulling out of the Middle East. It's a really complicated mess, though, and I doubt anyone here will live to see the end of our presence there.

If he was the baddest azz terrorist in the world and was being targeted by US military for years, I'm surprised that I don't recall ever reading or hearing about him before he was dead. If Soleimani was the person responsible for the attack where the American contractor was killed, then most any [Bleeeeep!]-for-tat response by the US is justified, whether it's Trump or someone else. Ya' know, that just makes so much sense on the surface of it, that is. Problem is twofold: First, you have the unstable genius deciding who is bad; and second, there are more bad people in the world than there are drones and missiles. Ooh! More industry and jobs!

Take the withdrawal from Turkey. Everyone was freaking out. But just a few days later we found the location of a ISIS leader in the region and took him out with a drone attack. During the withdrawal, there were a bunch of ISIS fighters that supposedly escaped. Are the incidents related? I don't know, neither should I. What we see is not alway what is going on in real life. My own father was manipulated by the US in Europe in his 20's and did not realize what had actually happened until he was in his late 60's. Still did not know the extent when he died, just that they had used him, and then orchestrated his leaving Europe.

Whether Soleimani is a 'bad hombre' or not isn't particularly relevant...it's both not legal, nor always a great idea to just go around killing people, even bad people.
