Plug Rods?

Was wondering what plug rod you thought was the best and why? My buddy uses the Lamiglas 8' one piece with like 13 guides? I'm looking to buy a pair so lets hear it boys/girls.

I have 2 8' plug rods that I would love to sell. Almost new and I bought to plug but I rememebered after I bought them that I don't do that anymore.

1 piece 8' Northrivers $50.00 each. They are very nice looking rods.

I was wondering if anyone has experience with the Lamiglas Classic Glass series plug rods...they're 8'2", 8-15#, fiberglass rods...they look pretty tasty for plug rods (I prefer fiberglass for plugs).

They're not very expensive, and are on sale now for about $60 at OE.

Fenwick fenglass FS83C, best pluggin rod hands down. Unfortunately they don't make the c version anymore.

I'm with you on that about the Fenwicks...the new Lamiglas rods are pretty similar, so that's what I'm thinking of stocking up on, especially if I can hear any current reports about their quality and usability.

I heard at a PSA meeting that the Lamiglas rods ARE the Fenwick rods - i.e. that Lamiglas bought the old Fenwick blanks and made the new Lamiglas series out of them.

If true, that is excellent news!

Like I said, they are awful similar...I took one off the rack and thought "Hmmm...just like the old Fenwicks...maybe I should pick up a couple and try them out!"

That is looking to be more and more likely!

I use Berkley IMX "Buzz Ramsey" plug rods. They're 1 pc. and 7'. They work great @ about 60 bucks.

Like others are alluding to I don't think you need to spend very much on a rod that will spend all day in the rod holders.

i use the loomis 981 c's ....it a one piece rod and i love em for pollies and other small plugs up to about a k-13/14.....they read so precise that you will know it when the slightest grass or leafs get caught on em and they have a strong back too for those times when you need one
for k-15 and 16's i use the fenwicks(glass) because they will swim bigger plugs better...those glass rods really dance throughout the whole body with those big kwickfish

Lami G1000 Series 1330T's. Got a matched set last year at the Sportsmen's SHow in Monroe...LOVE 'EM!

Rated 10-20 lb. line and Med/Mag, they can handle anything most rivers can dish out. I use them for all my plugging except for Chum...

Chum are just brutal to plug rods, and since I'm fishing Kwikies the good old 8'6" Ugly Stik's do a great job (just for Chum, mind you).

I second the 1330t,s they work for most anything. Mine have done a great job for me.

Most of the time I grab for the Loomis HSR 1021C. But I like Todd's idea... fiberglass rods are awesome for plugs. My favorite one got busted so maybe it's time to pick up a new one or two.

Check out Redington's new line of gear rods. I've been fishing the demo's hard for 8 months now and they are sweet!

Loomis 981

Fenwick FS85c's (don't got no 83c's. )

I just went with Loomis HSR 1021C GL2 rods. I would have gone with the 981, but I couldn't carry them except in the boat. The 1021s are two piece. The tips are a little lighter than the Lamiglas 1330 and the butt is a little stronger than the Lamiglas 1330. I feel in a pinch I can use them for heavy drift rods.

Since it is hard for me to carry much more than 6 rods in my driftboat, I don't want to carry fiberglas which isn't as sensitive or as good for double duty.

i have lamiglas cert pro fiberglass rods rated 10-20 8'6" , work great for kwikies. i need to get two steelhead plug rods now.. hmm the choices

gotta go with the the Loomis hsr 1021 guys. I have 4 of them, and use for k15's all the way down to hotshots. I agree they are sensitive enough to see your plugs are gunked up. Pretty tough rods, two of mine are 10 years old, and looking pretty battle worn. Set one of these babies up with an ambassedur 6500 and some 60lb power pro, and your ready for some serious kwikfishing.

Parker, I just got my second FS83C 100$ never been fished still had the paperwork attached. They are hard to come by, but keep your eyes open they are out there. Pretty common on ebay but spendy. I like the FS85c for kwickies.

I would't spend a bunch of money on a plug rod since sensitivity isn't important. It really doesn't matter if the rod is a g-loomis or g-cheapo, it will still bend when a fish takes the plug! I have three rods in my drift boat that we use for plugging. Two are spendy rods and the third is a 6' long has a blue bottom piece and the top half is red, lol. The cheap POS rod gets just as many bites and lands just as many fish as the spendy versions. In the big boat for springers and falls I also run heavy but cheap rods, like 25 dollars each! Each spring and fall I catch just as many salmon as my buds using their Loomis rods...if a fish slams you pick it up, simple as that. How much sensitivity is needed to see a 20# salmon hit a lure?

Save your money for the drift fishing rod...this is where "quality pays off" IMHO.

Well said Riverman, I have Berkley IM7 AIRs. I gottem for 50 each new. Reels are more important than the rods when it comes to pluggin...that's my $.02 worth. Loomis rods look cool in the boat though!

Probably a couple of my older 5500's...that's the usual evolution of fishing reels for me...I buy them new, beat the hell out of them driftfishing with them, keep rebuilding them until they are damn near all new parts, but look like they've been run over by a bus on the outside, and then they eventually end up as plug reels as newer ones replace them at the "top" of the list.

Riverman- I have to disagree with ya there! Sensitivity has everything to do with a good plug rod..I want to know exactly what my plugs are doing at all times..
