Looking for Lab homes - 01/16/10 06:19 AM

Mickey the Dam

Huntncoug's Blue the Sire hopefully

Just noticed Mickey is in heat and the timing is about perfect for pups.I have PMed Huntncoug the news as we have talked about breeding the the dogs before but I have not confirmed with him yet. I want both dogs looked at by a vet first and of coarse his blessing. I have homes for 2 pups now and would like to have homes for at least 2 or 3 more pups before I have her bread. Both dogs have good pedigrees but the pups will not be registered and an agreement that the pups will be fixed is part of the deal. I have always believed a dog should mature before being fixed but that doesn't need to be part of the deal. Mickey is an Indoor/outdoor family dog that loves everyone even cats and is very mellow. She was purchased for duck hunting. She retrieves, loves doing it but hasn't been formally trained and doesn't get to do it enough. She is very birdy, changes personality and is all business in the field. She also loves a fishing trip. First and foremost she is a constant companion. She goes to work with me almost everyday and spends a lot of time in my truck. I paid above average money for Mic because I wanted a quality, healthy dog.My hunting buddy owns her 3/4 brother Gunner. (same sire and dams sister)He has many of the same traits with a bit more energy. After hunting with that dog for the first hour of it's career with very little training I new I wanted a dog from the same lines and I wasn't disappointed. Although Gunner is a bit smaller(80ish) her Mom(over 90lbs) and dad(about 110) are big dogs and so is she. ( 90+) She has a big head, one of my favorite traits when I look for a lab and Its bigger than it appears in the pic. I am not looking for $$$ just good homes. Cost of the pups will cover shots dew claw removal for field dogs and normal vet bills incurred. If you really want a lab, have a good place for it and are low on funds talk to me. Don't BS me just talk to me. I am not doing this for money and know it will cost me more than what I get out of the pups. I don't want pups around without good homes. I do believe these are both very good dogs. Mickey's parents were Chocolate and Yellow. Any ?s please ask. I will ask Huntncoug to post about Blue here Too. If things go as planned the pups should be heading to their new homes about May 22nd.

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 01/17/10 07:29 PM

Puppies are a lot of work, be careful. We had lab puppies and 11 came out and they all survived. Chinook was a good mom but all she did was feed and lay with the pups, she didn't clean the poop up. About every 10 mins one will poop and then they all will roll in it if you don't clean it up asap. Then they cry at night once they get used to you being around I was ready to pull my hair out by week 8. Good Luck

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 01/17/10 11:58 PM

Its my first Lab litter but I have done 5 litters of Viszlas. Don't think I am not a bit hesitant to do this. If I don't have homes for 4 or 5 first It probably wont happen.
Lots of ceder chips and a 2 room whelping box once mom stops cleaning them.
This will be my last litter ever if it happens.

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 01/18/10 11:51 AM

My last dam had 2 litters of pups. Yes, they're quite a handfull, but very rewarding after the fact. We had them registered, OFA certified hips, and eyes too.

There's a great eye doc in spokane who will check them all out (Animal Eye Clinic). If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Maybe Francis would check the parents eyes out? LOL Just a joke.

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 01/18/10 07:20 PM

Very, very tempting. I'm thinking about it. It is great that you are mainly looking to breed good dogs and find good homes for them. thumbs

Kaiser is 12 years old, with the enthusiasm of a 2 year old and hips of a 20 year old.

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 01/18/10 09:42 PM

I made plans with Achewter and it sounds like we are going to do it. My dog Blue, the Sire, is a great hunting dog, his dad is a Tiger Mountain Pointing lab and his mom is from a pointing lab breeder in Kansas. He is registered but I never recieved the paper work from his breeder and I lost his phone number. He will point any upland bird that will hold and will retrieve anything you shoot. He is 105lbs (no fat) and a very good looking dog. He is the most layed back, easy going lab you will ever see, great with kids, and other dogs.

Very interested.
Can you predict colors that will be thrown?
Any health issues in the genes? hips?
My yellow is 12 and I have to start thinking of the future.

I think predicting colors is like predicting the weather. My litter was from 2 blacks and we got 3 yellows, 3 browns, and 5 blacks.

If there are no chocolates's in there lineage you will prob get 3 blacks to 1 yellow

If there is chocolate Its 60% Bl 25% Y 15% CH

Or if only one black has the yellow gene you would get all blacks

Thats just a start.

It's a crapshoot !!!!!

Nope no word on #9 yet, I have already called him 3 times today for status updates so I thought I would leave him alone. He is gonna have his hands full for the next two months so I am sure he could use any help he can get, I am gonna go over this weekend to see the pups and see if I can be of any help.
Posted by: Achewter

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 03/31/10 11:46 PM

Had to haul my girl to the vet for #9 thought I had probably lost it and wanted to be sure we got it out. After about an hour of intense work by a vet( I thought I didn't like )out pops another big black male in perfect condition. Left the vet feeling relieved the all day event was finally over. When we got home I opened the back door of the truck to lift Mickey out of the truck and we had one more than we left the vet with.#10

1 ch female, 3 ch male, 1 black female, and 5 black males All are doing great including one very tired moma. I'll try to get pics up soon...

Art would have to answer that one, if you wanted a chocolate or black male it shouldnt be a problem, since there are only 3 females getting one of those might be a little tougher.

2.Steve 1st pick Ch Male

3.Tower Todd Blk Female for his Daughter

4.landcruiserwille Ch female for his Daughter he says. I don't believe him but she and her Mom seem excited and made me brownies.(most PMs and earliest for female)

6.T rip 2nd pic Blk Male yea he never shuts up is anti cca and a left wing nut job but he was one of the first to ask even before I planed on doing this and I have never caught a big nate on a pink worm. Hell I have never caught a big nate.

7. My Mom 2nd pic Ch Male ( Smallest Ch male unless one of the Blacks turns out small. Good chance she wont take one at all)

now it gets a bit confusing

8.Driftfishnw 2nd or 3rd pic Ch male

9.Mike Bk male

10.FishBonker (only if Ch male is available)

11 and ALT for mom's dog and possibly #10.
Sumerrun, Goforchrome(was set on a female),

Everyone getting a pup should have a travel Kennel/crate.
Crate training is easy and a win Win WIN deal for both dog and owner.
when done rite your pups will sleep in them with the door open because they are secure and comfortable in them. I shouldn't let anyone take home a pup without one.

Yeah, both of the dogs were on good behavior this weekend. I was impressed at how well Chase hung around without destroying anything. He just kind of bounced back and forth between camps and was always listening for his name to be called. For 1.5 years, he looked pretty calm in the boat.

Kaiser had a great time riding in the back of the boat and soaking in some sunshine although I'm sure he is enjoying a full day of sleep at home today.

Happy B-Day, Tony. thumbs

Pup's should be with mom and other pups' at least until there 8 weeks 9 or 10 would be better

If ya mess em up now there's no goin back.

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 04/27/10 11:27 PM

29th OF MAY would be 8 weeks and 3 days (59 days) and give the new owners Memorial day weekend home with the pups. The last 5 litters of Viszlas I did we shot for 8 weeks. So I guess we agree. Sorry for the 1 am Tequila math. I took Mickey home at about 52 days with only one pup from the litter left at the breeders and she survived. I am not to worried about it. I have herd the 49 day thing helps pups to bond a bit tighter with the owner but it does seem a bit early to me. If the new owner felt strongly about it and could show a bit of supporting evidence I wouldn't fight it to hard.
Thanks for your concern...Art

Thank's for the civilized response I did the math after I wrote that and felt bad.
My 2 cent's is that pup's are learning a great deal abought how to interact with other dog's and just be dog's in those week's after there eye's open. Also if you (or the kid's) get to rough with them at that young age they will be forever on the defensive.

Kudo's to you for setting this up my biggest concern abought pup's is that they go to good homes and from the look's of this whole deal them are some lucky dog's.

Hey Art, letting them go at 8 weeks is perfect, I did a lot of research before I got Blue and my pup Sky, a lot of people agree 8 weeks, no sooner or later. I have the book Game Dog and he says 49 days, not 48 and not 50.

Hey Art. What are you feeding them? I want to begin wiht the same food so Tye doesn't have to deal with a food change right away.

Thanks again Art. We'll see you tomorrow night! What Vedder said...."what brand and type of food are you feeding"?
Posted by: Achewter

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/20/10 11:44 PM

Kirkland from Costco. Both the puppy and adult food are real good and were suggested by Mickey's breeder.
Posted by: landcruiserwilly

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/21/10 02:03 PM

can't find the link right now, but the kirkland is one of the highest rated foods around, and you really can't beat the price. we picked up a 20# bag of puppy formula for $12 at costco yesterday. it's made by diamond if you're interested. no corn, no soy. these are important factors in choosing a food. dogs (and chickens and cows and most everything...) were not made to eat corn. can cause digestive issues, skin issues etc. whatever you choose, try and stay away from corn...

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/21/10 03:15 PM

Couldn't agree more, willy. I started Kaiser off on Science Diet (not cheap food!). After a while, he started getting red spots on his belly that kind of resembled flea bites. My vet said it could be caused by his food and, sure enough, even with Science Diet, the number 1 ingredient is corn. Switched him to Iams Eukanuba (also not cheap!) and within days, the spots were gone and never came back. I believe chicken is the number one ingredient in the Eukanuba I buy.

I recently have been looking at alternatives to the Iams as it is about $50+ for a 40 pound bag (does that seem ridiculously high to anyone else?). The Kirkland is indeed rated as one of the best dog foods out there and is a surprisingly reasonable price in comparison to the other "good" foods.

Can't wait! Art has done a stunning job in caring for the pups. Awesome socialization with adults, kids, cats, and dogs.

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/21/10 04:20 PM

had the same thing with the skin on my last dog. (i even think that it was science diet). we ended up feeding lamb and rice, then allergy formula venison and rice to finally get rid of the skin issues. think we were paying upwards of $1.00/ lb as well. it is ridiculous! we can't wait to take our pup home. we're going to spend the weekend getting the house ready for puppyhood.

Gotta say it was a real pleasure to meet Art, Drake, and Ali (sp?)! They've done a great job raising the pups!!! We took the yellow one (Lu-Lu) home to Wenatchee last night. She slept through the night in her air kennel and she's retrieving to hand. We had to run all kinds of errands today and she just "chilled" in her dog box in the pickup waiting for us. We're very happy with the new family member. Thanks again Art!!!!!!!!

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/24/10 12:07 AM

I went over to Arts house tonight and all dogs are awesome. Every litter I have ever picked dogs out of had one or two that were obviously inferieor to the rest of the litter. Every dog that I saw tonight was an awesome specimen, I couldnt pick out one that was better then another. Although Kaiser, your pup was a fetching machine, I threw the tennis ball a couple times and he brought it back, not right away but it ended up back at my feet.

Did you put her in the kennel before you left Arts? I have a small travel kennel, but was concerned that shoving Tye in it might make him wary of kennels. I wa planning on having the wife and or grandson hold Tye on thier lap on the way home. My thought was to put his food and water in the big kennel at home then let him get used to going in there on his own. Any thoughts guys?

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/24/10 03:13 AM

The Mrs held her until we got thru Monroe, then we slid her into a small pet carrier. She never even snivelled all the way home! She loves her nest.It seems like the more towels and stuff the better. Reminds her of the whelping box and all her brothers (and sister) snuggled in.

Today was 10hrs of fishing (more like boating. lost one good fish and caught a dink) on Rufus and she slept about 8hrs plus the ride up and back from Wenatchee. I gotta say, they're damn nice dogs (so far LOL)! We're super excited about our new family member! It seems the breeding was an exceptional match for disposition. I'm sure there will be trials, but these pups have a great start. Art and family did a great job of acclimating the pups to different people and situations. Ours is just perfect (so far). The kiddo (6 yo) gets to meet her tomorrow night and he'll just lose his mind!!!!!!!!!

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/24/10 03:32 AM

All 3 pups have left on laps so far Dave. The black female and Mack the biggest male left today. Probably safer to have the dog in the kennel but I wouldn't do it on that first ride home. If ya want to drop a kennel by I can start feeding a few meals in it and give it some sent with some of the bedding the pups are sleeping on now. The main thing is to start out any Kennel time as a positive thing for the pups.
Tell the dog to Kennel up. Gently force the dog into the kennel and praise him for being in the kennel. Shut the door for just a few seconds then open it and call him out. Repeat repeat repeat until he doesn't try to get out for about 30 seconds then give it a rest for awhile and leave the kennel open and ignore it for awhile. If the pup goes back in on it's own praise the hell out of him. If the pup falls asleep in the kennel shut the door. when it wakes open the door as soon as it wants out and take the pup strait out side and wait for it to go 1 or 2. if it does praise the hell out of it and let it come back in and play for a bit before you lock it up again. Good chance the pup may have to cry itself to sleep a few times. Almost guaranteed you will loose a bit of sleep over the pup that first few nights.

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/24/10 10:48 AM

Art, I borrowed a travel kennel for Tye, but now think its too small. I think he will ride on Pam's lap to home. At home I have a big foldable kennel for him to call home.

Any chance of picking him up Wednesday PM? We go on a trip to a motel on Spectacle Lake on June 11, I would like Tye to be at least partially house broken by then. I figure two more days can't hurt.

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 05/24/10 12:41 PM

Dave,
You'll probably want to bring the kennel anyways.

I picked Sage up in Cottage Grove Or. I had a friend drive and brought a cat kennel. I figured Sage would be restless and in my lap the whole way home. She got squirrely so I let her sort of explore around the truck. She found the cat kennel, poked her head in and slept all the way back to the eastside (a pre hiddin pupperoni helped smile )

I think you will be amazed at just how much they love their kennel time and also how easy it is to potty train using kennels. My guess your pup and all others here will be potty trained within a week.

Even today after a day in the field I'll give her the "kennel" command and she'll give me that "Thank God, I'm pooped" look! Just a couple of weeks ago Ike and I were camping and I was playing around with my new bow. The sound really freaked her out so she slinked her way back to hide in her kennel!

Kennels are the greatest for both owner and pup!

Re: Looking for Lab homes - 06/01/10 11:48 PM

Beware of flees. Found 2 on Radar today. Stopped and picked up a puppy treatment and when I got home and read the box it said not before 12 weeks. Will have to find something else. Hope he didn't get them here but it wouldn't surprise me. He has gotten around over the weekend and has been scratching a bit so keep an eye out. Scratch around your pups belly about an inch into the hair line and watch to see if any run out onto his bear belly. With the mild winter it's sure to be bad this year... Keep a close eye on it.
