That story reminds me of something I was involved in. When I was growing up, our property bordered about 75 acres of reprod, that was surrounded by developments on one side, farms on 2 sides, and vast forest land on the back. It was full of deer. Several nice blacktails made their home there. We were very protective of them, and access to the area was very minimal. No one hunted it.
I had the bucks pretty well memorized and knew their habits/hangouts enough that I could find a few nice deer within hours. I used them to practice stalking, and watching animal behavior. Well, my folks decided to sell and I was there when the husband was going through the place. He started talking about how he knew there were big bucks back in there, and how he couldn't wait to cull a few.
That got me thinking, and I more or less decided that I would determine what bucks were left for him (this was completely based on selfishness, as far as I can remember - I was about 18 or 19). He is a nice guy, I shouldn't have done it to the degree I did. I started taking friends and friends of friends back there to hunt those deer. They all shot bucks. I even had a guy come out and borrow a rifle, and shoot a tremendous 4x3 within about 2 hours of his first hunt ever. He came with little opera glasses on a stick for binoculars for Chrissakes!
I can say I saw a lot of people shoot their first deer, but looking back it was a mistake, to wipe out all of those bucks. I never shot one myself, but if I ever wanted any meat I had like 12 different numbers to call.

Over a million Deer, get harvested in some single States alone. Why is it "bad form" to lump a few together, for a picture?
I figure it far worse form to use "slotter" as a word.

Some states have rules that allow harvesting multiple deer in a single day. Alaska is one (residents can get 10, non residents 4 in certain areas).

Deer are Vermin in some locales, just as Doves are. Pretty tough to lose sleep over Resource Management being instilled in common sense accords.
For some reason,I'd even go so far as to say the group photo will not skew relative tablefare either.

Would you feel differently if it was 11 guys standing on a beach with legal limits of ho's and lots of pink stacked up in front of them? Hmmm... There I fixed it for you--and yes I would feel differently

I have looked at that pic several times this week and am still not sure what to think. First I thought, HOLY SH-T. Then I thought, there are some very nice bucks in there. Then I am thinking, why the hell dont they get those things hanging so there is no meat spoilage. Now I am pissed because I was invited to the slaughter.

Hard horns and the garb associated, hardly hint at sweltering heat and instantaneous meat spoilage.

If it's legal that's cool...I guess from this area, we are'nt used to getting a chance to shoot (2) really nice bucks in the same trip....

Stam If you want to do a Sept trophy blacktail hunt on Kodiak and catch silvers and Halibut in 60 to 120' of water on what feels like a lake let me know.

"Luck" is easy to dole in copious amount, for those inclined.
Joe Average is a very dismal barometer of evaluation, for that which is both possible and predictable, for those predisposed to success.
Many overlook that factoid.

Elk held my interest for a spell and if they did not vocalize, wear hi-vis coats, run trails, stink and herd...they'd be a challenge.
I dig Dlacktail because they are slippery.
I'll take all the gratis luck I can get,but focus expressly on making my own.

Sometimes the challenge has to come from the style. Challenge #1 was just getting to where they were. Challenge#2 was killing the biggest MF'er in the woods. Challenge#3 was killing them with homemade sh.it Challenge#4 was getting massive amounts of meat back to the freezer Never put down elk.....it could piss me off I never made a road kill on elk, in fact I had a hard time finding able partners that had the inclination to go deep. But......I give blacktail their due, amazing beasts and I know they live and die of old age right among us. I see many of your pics of the SE AK coastal bucks and dandies they are, but they tend to be out........in the open, it's a rare *good* buck that tips over down here in a clearcut.... with the occasional rut exception. cagey brutes.

A picture is worth a thousand words... I feel inspired.... not being one to brag ;)...but, I've held my tongue long enough. I used to kill sh.it. this bull certainly isn't the biggest, but I think I had to shoo him back a touch so I could draw my bow, still have the chunk of skull where the arrow penetrated into his brain cavity on the first shot, and as he was smoking down the hill I put one where it belonged. ...and it was deep, no easy packs for me. From my youth, before grey hair and whiskers and discovering that traditional is much, much more rewarding. I suspect that I'm a bit tired as this one was a bit of a pack, me and brother got it done in a couple of trips from 3 miles and 2500ft up the hill just making meat. one of the bonuses of going where most won't (okay, nobody will) is all the cool crap you find. they don't all make it through. http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/uploads/UP1632.jpgback to the big ones.... tough hunt, tougher pack.....find finley lake and you can find this gene pool. and this....probably my favorite rack, it hangs in a place of honor in the guide shack in forks There ya' go Bret, mebee not worth a thousand words.........but close?

Damn! Is that GI Joe or Dr. Bannon Quest? funny that you mention Mr. Joe as my early years (pre-nintendo) (pre "pong") (pre-color teevee) were spent makeing little bows and arrows and pretending to be Mr. G.I. Joe...guess I grew up kinda slow. Who is Dr. Bannon Quest, not familiar....?

That's the rack in the coffee shop? oh god no, hangs high on the wall on the bigboys playhouse in sappho, the coffee shop bull is pretty standard. I will wsy that a trip into the saw shop in forks is worth the visit, couple of interesting items in there and all displayed nicely....I like the random irreverent style.

Great pics. I'd definitely agree that whitetails are easier to hunt than blacktails, and mule deer are easier than whitetails. Maybe that's because I grew up hunting whitetails or something so I understand them better. I know that I'm 0-for-3 on blacktails of any kind and am getting discouraged.
