I get asked this question a lot - how do you post photos on PP?

I just spent the time answering this question for a friend here on PP. It's probably a worth enough email that I thought I'd copy/paste the instructions here.

Please feel free to *contribute* to this email, as it can and should be a valuable post for others to use in the future.

I'd really like to see some URL's or recommendations for a *good* and free imagine editor for a PC.

Here's what I emailed someone not too long ago:

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Ok. Here are you step-by-step instructions on how to post images on to Piscatorial Pursuits.

It's a 3-phase operation. Phase 1 consists of image processing. Phase 2 consists of the actual "uploading" of the photo on to Piscatorial Pursuits. Finally, Phase 3 consists of getting the correct code that contains your photo and getting that up on a post.

Phase 1 - Image Processing.

Once you have taken that digital photo of a lifetime and have chose to post it to PP, you will need to digitally resize the image so that it no only will it fit on your computer screen, but won't be so big that the others can't view it. For that, you will need to use some photo editing software. I personally use Adobe Photoshop, but that's a costly, and not-so-free software package. In doing a bit of searching, I found some free photo editing software that you might want to download and try: http://photoscape.en.softonic.com/download

The basic rule of thumb when it comes to resizing an image is to this: 72 dpi (dots per inch) is all you need for viewing on the web. As you will soon learn, most digital photos will come out of your camera at some god-awfully large dpi size - like 300 or so. The reason for the large file sizes is for *printing*. Printing is the not the same as *viewing* on your computer. To view, the human eye is only going to see 72 dpi. So, we need to change those photos. The other basic rule of thumb is the actual measurement of the photo in inches. For most web page viewing stuff, I prefer a 5x7 photo, at 72 dpi. What you need to realize is that a 5x7 photo at 300 dpi is WAY HUGE compared to a 5x7 at 72 dpi photo. So, when you are editing your photos, make sure to change them to 5x7 at 72 dpi. Once changed, do a "SAVE AS" and save them as a .jpg file. If you are asked for a compression level (0 being fully compressed by crappy picture quality , vs 10 which is no compression and great picture quality, pick something like a 7 or 8. The picture will look great and your photosize will be something reasonable. 100K, vs many Megabytes. (Remember that there are 1024K in ONE megabyte). Your photo directly out of the camera will be something on the lines of 3MB, or 3000+ kilobytes. By virtue of using an imaging resizing program and remembering to save your image as a 5x7 at 72 dpi, we will reduce that photo down from 3000+ kilobytes to something like 150 Kilobytes. At this point, you now have a newly saved image (remember where you saved it to) file that is all ready to be uploaded to Piscatorial Pursuits.

Phase 2 - Uploading.

The basic premise of this operation is such: You go to a specific web page on Piscatorial Pursuits that presents the photo uploader to you as a form. You fill out the form, tell the uploader where your new created image file is and submit the request. If successful, the file is automatically uploaded someplace on PP. You are told via a web page that your upload was successful and that you will be EMAILED the results of where it is. The results of that email will be Phase 3.

So, the URL to the PP Uploading web page can be found here: http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/upform.html I suggest you bookmark this page and make it apparent to yourself this is the page to go to to upload your photos. Go there now and start filling in the form. In this case, I'm going to use a photo called test.jpg as our example.

The information requested in the form is pretty basic:

Full Name - Put your full name here
Email - IMPORTANT to put a valid email address here, as this is email *IS* Phase 3. We *have* to get this email...
Category. Choose an appropriate category for your photo.
Title - Come up with a title name for your photo
Description - put a description in here
File to Upload (Choose File button). Once you click on that "Choose File Button", go and select your newly created image file.

When you have filled out all the information in the forms and have selected your file to upload, click on the Submit Picture button. If all went well and you were successful in uploading your photo, you will see a web page that actually shows your uploaded photo with "SUCCESS" on the top in red. If you were not successful, the web page should tell you why. At that point, try to fix whatever you did wrong and try again.

Phase 3 - Copying and Pasting the URL code from your email to a post in PP.

At this point, you MUST receive the confirmation email telling you that your photo was uploaded. It will show up in your INBOX as from rlball@olypen.com with the title of "Piscatorial Pursuits Photo Upload". Open that email. Half-way down your email will be a line of URL code. THAT is the code we need to copy and paste in to your new PP post. AS AN EXAMPLE, the line of code will look like this in your email:

File #1 : http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/uploads/UP17401.jpg , 83602 bytes, on 2/17/2009 - 8:30 a.m..

Of that line, the only part that WE REALLY NEED is this:

http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/uploads/UP17401.jpg

VALID URL code starts with the http and ends with your your file name extension (.jpg). This is called a URL

Using your mouse, left click to select your line of code that looks like this: http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/uploads/UP17401.jpg Right click on your mouse and select Copy.

Open up or go to your post in Piscatorial Pursuits. Start a new thread, or edit a post. The code to use for images starts with: [img] followed by your URL, and ending with a [/img]

In the case of our test, a correct line of ready-to-be-posted code will look like this:

"[img] http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/uploads/UP17401.jpg [img]"
(remove the quotes)

So, back in your post, put in the [img] tag, right click on the screen and select Paste (that will paste the URL) and end your line of code with [/img]

Again, it will look something like this:

At this point, hit "Preview" to verify that you have completed all the steps. You SHOULD see your image in your post. If so, hit the POST button and that's it.

Good post Parker.

for resizing I am lazy and old fashioned so I just open up Microsoft Office picture manager and click on edit / resize then manually select the size I want. Doesn't take too long and even a 'puter noob like me can do it rofl

Ask and ye shall receive. smile

Here's a free image editor from good ol' Microsoft. Works on PCs running the XP operating system.

Once installed, all you need to do is find the file on your computer (using My Computer or Windows Explorer) and right-click on it.

Select the option "Resize pictures", select the "Advanced" button and type in the pixels you want to reduce your own pic to and . . .

Voila!

Mainly I've just used the the http://www.irfanview.com/ freeware to resize/resample a copy of my original. Then, just used the "file manager" to include it at the bottom of the post.

I like that this freeware saves the settings and location of the file. Makes it very eazy to repeat on the copy of your next image.

Open a photobucket account, and don't deal with resizing pictures and all that.

Just link to them.

So easy even I can do it...................

But probably tough for them Hobart types.

Even harder if you lived in Selleck.......................

You forgot the "File Manager" feature at the bottom of every reply that you post (before actually submitting the post).

Click that option and it will bring up a "Browse" button that you can select a properly sized JPG right out of your own hard drive. The only difference is all the pics show up at the end of the post. The limit is eight pics attached to the end of your post. While there is an option to add short captions, you will not be able to add any substantial narrative between the pics in your post.

Thanks Parker for taking the time to put this up, as well as to others who added some more ideas. Maybe Bob can edit this up a bit and provide a direct link to the how to, maybe with a header at the top of the page that says, "how to post photos".

Word to KK.

Open a photobucket account. Easy as pie. Load your photos directly from your cam or flash drive to photobucket, click and copy the image address, and paste into your PP post.

Done.

I'd paste one right here, but f'n photobucket is doing site maintenance right now. rofl

I wouldn't know anything about posting pictures on this site wink I used the FnP method, just made sure all photos were 150 mega-killipeders or smaller smile

I use photobucket on another site because they aren't as user friendly as PP.
