Glacier Bear Lodge is up and running and here is the first trip out to
the Halibut grounds!
Check out the snow in the background! Roads are open and the Steelhead fishing pretty darn good as well.

Not sure you really need a guide for that river!

Many do not need a guide but the majority of new people need at least one day with a guide so they don't wast 1 or 2 days figuring it out. It does take some figuring! I have seen many seasoned vets hook 2 or 3 fish in a morning and the guys that know how, where and what to fish catch 20 or 30.

Heck, one of the partners was up over the weekend and he is our token fly fisherman and a darn good one and he hooked 20 fish his first drift!!
If he can hook that many, it must be great, he is a fly fisherman!
Just think what a real gear chucker would hook! wink

Lots of long faces on the river.... rain rain go away, I think some numbers may have gotten slightly exaggerated wink but there are definitely some fish in the river, waiting out the tidefish on day one was the best, supercool to spot and cast to them with drift gear, we hooked seven or eight on friday floating and they were all fresh fish, plenty of traffic on the river too, going with a guide that had hit it for several days previous would be a bonus in knowing where the fish were, lots of empty habitat right now... upriver was a bit of a goatshow with the holding spots locked up early, rough walking with 4 and 5 ft of snow in places so prospecting would wear a guy out. Hali fishing was great, limited on biggun's on Saturday, released many lings as the season is not open yet.

Fun first time up there!
Worked n the yard yesterday and am currently hanging stuff to dry out from that last rain storm.
Agreed that there were a lot more people up there then I had imagined but pretty decent fishing (but no 40+ number days like you hear)
GBL was a great place to stay with a great value I felt like when I got my bill.
Ill get some pics up when I have a chance to catch up
and thanks to the homies in the group, good times for sure!

Steve, you didn't tell me you were going up?
Yes, the snow is definately making it hard to get to a hole so the easy places get full quickly, as May progresses, it will get better as there will be more access and lot's more fresh fish to move in. The main push the last few years has been the second week of May, then the river will have lot's of fresh and carryovers.

Unless the fresh fish are coming strong on the tide, the Situk is like any other Steelhead river other than they are all Native and you have to work a bit to hook fish, but you will hook fish.
Drifting the river is definately giving more opportunity and my fly guy is a good example. I still like tide fishing, but it is hard to beat the 14 mile drift as there are so many holes to stop in and you just move down if you run into another boat, plenty of water!
