We did so well on the opener that we decided to drive down for the bonus day this morning. Not a good decision. Next time someone posts that there are 'birds and mammals a plenty' at my intended fishing hole, I will know to skip it. There were a dozen or more pinnipeds at Lexington, and no smelt. I mean, none. There was actually a traffic jam around 8:20 as everyone piled back into their vehicles with empty buckets to leave. We went north and checked a couple other spots. Saw one bucket with about 10, and another with maybe two dozen and that was it. Didn't see a single fish caught. Asked the fishing police up by Castle Rock and they said no one was catching anything. Interestingly, the mood didn't seem all that bad on the shores. It wasn't raining. Quite a few kids playing hooky. And maybe smelt, as a fish, just isn't worth getting too riled up about.
