I don't think Greenland has the population required to become a state. It's not even barely enough for a territory. However there is a third option, a compact of free association. We have compacts of free association with the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau. So what I see as possible for Greenland is that they vote for independence then join a compact of free association with the US. I don't see them becoming a state or territory.
