You could also try a Deep Six diver, I have downriggers on my boat, and had never used Deep Six's until I was on someone else's boat two weeks ago, they worked great!! I'm going to get one or two to run when I have a lot of people in the boat.

They run at basically a 45 degree angle, so if you let out 60 feet of line, you're probably running about 30 feet deep. We were running small flashers and hootchies, and also spoons off of them.

A good way to estimate how much line you have out (assuming you're using a levelwind reel) is to watch the levelwind bar as it goes back & forth. Figure out how much line comes out in one pass (probably 8 to 10 feet) then just count passes of the bar.
