As Ultimate said, most people fishing the mainstream Snake use a float, although I rarely do. I just use eggs with no weight other than a swivel between the mainline and leader, and let the current do the rest. As for the tucannon, I fish upstream just enough that I am out of the slackwater. This is about 1/2 to 1 mile. The road to Starbuck follows the river. Then use bait or lures, drifting the bait. Caution, if the day is warm you could run into a rattle snake or two. Usually don't find them this time of year, but I have before.
