By this time of the year the salmon eggs and the rotting flesh of spawned-out salmon are pretty well gone and, while steelhead flies will still pick up the odd dolly, salmon (or steelhead) parr and smolt patterns will usually do better. I use a big (3- or 4-inch long) white rabbit-strip string leech pattern in dirty water and a more realistic baitfish pattern under clearer conditions.
