I do think about sustainable harvest a lot. Sustainability will not happen until the mindsets of fishermen are changed to the tune that limiting out, while great for your ego is not what's best for the fish. I hate to be a hypocritical pessimist, but here i go.

Here's my take on commercial trawl fisheries:

As long as we allow people to fish in such a manner that all forms of marine life are indiscriminately caught, there will be no sustainability. Unfortunately I don't think there is a better method of commercial harvest than using a net. So really there will always be a certain degree of overfishing. I for one am guilty of having contributed to this problem in the earlier part of my fishing journey. It saddens me to know that the necessary changes to make fish populations return to robust levels are all going to be hard fought if we continue to go head to head with industry. Forgive for saying this, but I don't think that I will live long enough to live the day when I can consciously fish without a guilty conscience. For me and I believe the rest of us, there will never be a day of rest until humans learn to live with nature instead of going against it.

The future generations will bear the brunt of the sins of the forefathers and the sins of their forefathers...

I may someday have to quit fishing just to make a statement about sustainable harvest.
