I fished Westport on Wed. with my daughter, her friend from Rochester, NY and my fishing buddy. This was the first time in several years that the boat did not limit out. The charter boats were running about 25 miles down by Willapa Bay. I didn't want to go that far so we went straight out west about 9 miles to 175'. Christina from NY caught her first salmon by 0645. It was a short but very fat 32 lb king. It was taken at 45 ' on a 4" glow green/white coyote spoon behind a flasher. She was physically drained by the time I netted the fish. After releasing several small chinook or wild cohos, we caught a 13 lb chinook at 100' on a magnum green glow squid behind a green glow flasher. A short while later we got a nice 8 lb hatchery coho at 25' on a white glow squid. From about 10:00 to noon we had no action at all. Then we started picking up blackmouth on the magnum green squid at 100'. We kept one that was just over the legal 26" limit and released about 4 others that were too small or had too many fins. Though we ended up with half a limit, the weather and water conditions were great and a new fisherman started off with a bang.
