Parker nailed it, if you aren't making any ground on the fish, tighten your drag a little so you do make some ground. Every turn of the bail puts a full twist in your line. I see guys reel like mad to no avail and once the fish is landed the next cast is a total mess. Or, if the fish breaks off a nice bird nest snaps back at you. I can't remember what line I have on my spinning reel, but if the fish is running, I let him run and tight the drag until he isn't running so fast, and then start reeling him in.

Spinning reels are real hard to keep your line straight fighting big fish, just part of the game.
