Very difficult to tell, especially from the tilted angle.

My guess: Female coho

Here's why: As best as I could count, there were 13 rays in the anal fin. A characteristic of salmon. 14 or more and it's a trout. (in this case a steelhead)

I couldn't see into the mouth completely, but a steelhead has an all white mouth. Coho has black with white on the gumline where the teeth are set. I'd also be a bit more sure if I could see the tail better.

The scale loss where you're gripping it. I'm not exactly sure, but it's been my experience that chrome bright salmon lose their scales more easily than a bright steelhead.

All of this is best-guess on my part of course, and if it turns out that it really was a steelhead, well... it just goes to show how much I think I know. laugh laugh
