I don't know about any consensus. I just turn or bend the eye in the direction I want it to swim until it runs dead, absolutely, perfectly straight. If it won't tune, I pitch it. I think I catch as many fish with kwickies as most amateurs, doing it this way. I either add a split ring or swap the trebles out for a swivel and siwashes. The original reason for the siwashes was to fish the Grays Harbor streams which require singles. However, I found that they hooked just as well, and I think better, than the trebles, so I do it to most plugs now. I tend to think we lose fewer fish after the hookup when using siwashes.

Backing the eye out seems reckless to me if you are after the bigger fish. It's also unnecessary, in my opinion.
