What you do is you tie a big swivel onto your main line, and then run about 24" of lighter line down to your sinker. You cast this out and wait for it to get to the bottom. After drawing it up tight, attach the bait via a hook that's attached to a snap swivel that's smaller than the diameter of the swivel near the sinker (the wire ones that you can open completely work best), and put on a smaller (like 1/2 - 1 oz max) and clip it to the line. Slide the bait down to the water, and wait for it to sink down to the swivel. Bingo.
