I'm curious to know what kind of rod and reel you were using. Even though the fish are not big(unless you're after lings), you're better off using something that has plenty of backbone so that you can steer the fish away from the rocks. I would recommend a medium heavy to heavy action rod. Reel isn't important unless you're after lingcod, then in that case you want one with a good drag. Also remember to properly set your drag. Don't get me wrong though, during slack tides you CAN get away with lighter tackle. By the way, if I didn't mention it before, I'll say that I do not believe there is any line out on the market that can truly stand up to the barnacles and mussels that are apt to slice your line.
