Remember that this even year fish are completely different that the odd year run. First the size of the run is much smaller. The last couple odd year cycles there have been well over a million pinks in the Snohomish system. The expected return of even year fish is expected to be less than 100,000 - more than an order of magnitude smaller.

Secondly they spawn much earlier than the odd year fish with first spawning in early September. As a result they enter the river much earlier than the odd year fish (this may account for their smaller size). Best guess than as much as 1/2 the fish may already be in the river.

Finally they don't seem to mill around in the terminal area like the odd year fish. Meaning they directly migrate through the salt and right up the river. As a result they don't concentrate in numbers in Marine area 8-2 or the lower river like the odd year fish.
