I always start at 30 feet in the morning. I'll run one rod at 30 and another at 45. If nothing, I'll put one at 50 and the other at 75. And so on, until we start hitting fish. Once I find a zone, I still separate the lines by about 10 feet. That's probably just because I'm anal. ;\)

For gear, I like a chartreuse/glo hotspot flasher, about 30 inches of leader, a chartreuse glo squid, with a herring fillet hanging from the squid. If they're around, that seems to get them pretty reliably. Kings bite it pretty well, too.
