Dave ... You may need to install the Macromedia Flash Player. The symbol you descibe is normally an image placeholder for IE, but perhaps the messge displayed for those w/o flash is an image and for some reason is not working.

Should be able to go to Macromedia.com and download the player ... lots of sites incorporate it nowadays \:\)
