Ed I think the new system was born out of frustration for exactly what you are proposing to do. Democrats voting for Republicans in the primary to mess up the process instead of voting honestly. That would allow you and others to vote for the weaker Republican in the hopes that the stronger candidate wouldn't get the nod to face your favorite Democrat, thus increasing your odds.
