The open bag is shaped like a laundry basket... the idea is to create a "net-pen" with vertical walls and a flat floor. The fish has plenty of breathing room without getting all tangled up in the mesh, yet the "floor" suspends the fish high enough for an easy release.

My Magnum FinSaver Pen easily holds kings to 45 pounds, and when I have the hoop/yoke level with my coaming gunnel, a nice big salmon is perfectly cradled in the top 8-10" of the water surface. Unlike the ultra deep bags, the fish's head won't sink down into the bottom of a deep sac where it becomes a royal PITA just to get it oriented back head-up to remove the hook.

That is exactly how I had my net laying across the coaming gunnel when California Sea lion wanted the wild springer worse than me. Beckman replaced my net free of charge under warranty!!!! I was impressed.
