Executing innocent people is about as far from justice as one can get.

State-sponsored revenge is OK by me as long as we take revenge on the right people.

Killing the wrong people expands injustice. When there is no lack of certainty, I'm cool with killing the bad asses as a measure to prevent subsequent crimes. Hell, I'm cool with killing the little fart down the road if he breaks into my place again. If they're guilty, I won't miss 'em.

Ultimately, how can you be sure that you are killing the right people? Hitler was sure he was doing the right thing. The point is that this is a slippery slope when people are playing god - I've never seen a good outcome in human history when people elevate themselves to deity level. Besides, I prefer a lifetime of servitude for criminals along the lines of "Cool Hand Luke." The death penalty does not deter lowlifes from killing, so why not get something back from them in the form of back breaking work?
