Why would people read Canadian news? To get a different viewpoint that may cause us to (gasp!) think. One of the things that I have noticed with the rich quantity (not necessarily quality) of media that we have is that most seem to listen, watch, or read information that reinforces their viewpoint. I remember back in the old days (1960's), I would listen to shortwave radio. This was during the Vietnam War. I would listen to Uncle Walt on CBS, then listen to Radio Moscow, BBC, occasionaly Radio Hanoi. It was fascinating to hear stories about the same event with such different slants. I now go out of my way to read, listen, and watch media that does not reinforce my viewpoint. It helps me think and I believe gives me the ability to find truth in spite of ideology.
