The thing is, it won't matter...the massive amount of poor white Republicans who continually vote for Republicans in direct contradiction to their own interests and well-being vote for them for only a couple of reasons...and among them is that they hate gay people and abortion rights, and they think God is on their side in this hate.

The Fundamentalists are aligned with the Right because they can work together on these issues...and those folks aren't voting for Democrats anyway, so if (and when) a Democrat takes the same hit, it won't hurt them nearly so much, because those folks don't vote for Dems anyway.

Sooner or later the alliance between the gay/abortion hating poor whites and the Republican Party will fray, and when it does the R's will lose a big part of their voting base.

It will probably take a third party to get it done...one that leaves all the self-righteous religious bullchit at the door and campaigns on actual issues.
