Rockfish,

Herring strips or filets came about in the 1940s when saving money was important and make a day's bait last longer- the spinner was devise.

Young guys call them filets or strips, but us old timers call them spinners.

First instead of buying orange label, buy black label. Three times as many spinners can be made. Next brine the herring. You can also cut them to size and salt the hell out of them.

Bevel each spinner like a cut plug for correct action.

Here's a trick my grandpa taught me as a young buck...

Tie your leader as normal excpet on the front hook tie in a heavy mono spike. Pictured below is a double hook rigged on 12# Maxima UG and the spike is 30#. When you place the herring on the hook, you first go through the flesh, out the skin, and back through the flesh. Slide the spinner up to the knot and impale the flesh with the spike and slightly pull the spinner back... Back hook dangles... The spinner does not slide down the hook.

Enjoy!
