I fish the strip pretty regularly. And like CDR, my ol' man called it the cut spinner. I've heard it called the cheater bait because it can be very effective, especially for feeding chinook in shallow clear water. I usually fish large strips cut out of usually purple label. And rigging strips is very simple.

-Make sure your herring is good and is thoroughly brined as you would want with your cutplugs.

-Use a thin-bladed super sharp knife to cut the strip from the herring. Do not use your bleed/gut knife to tear the strip off.

-The spin of the strip is based on hook placement and the leading beveled edge (again like a cutplug)

-better to use the smallest lightest hooks possible to get the most action at the slowest speeds.

It should look about like this.

The trail hook is free to maximize the wiggle. The leading edge is beveled about 60 derees down and 45 back. The lead hook is placed skin side first, and then back through the meat side. This gives the strip an "apex lure" shape, and also keep the skin/scale side out (instead of the meat side) for maximum flash.

Good luck Ron.
