In all honesty I believe the 10'6" model feels great and has some nice amenities for the price. It is basically the thin wall construction (which drifter101 cited), that represents trouble. It would aid in preventing breakage issues if there were a few more guides added to rods costing $150 and under, making for a more progressive flex/curve when loaded, and less lengthy flat spots. Consequently when rods are of the thin walled variety the added weight of extra guides and mini flat spots created by further thread wraps dampen/slow actions to where they loose sensitivity, signifigantly.

The primary issues with inexpensive rods are all inclusive to associated "cost effective production" in overseas facilities. When you factor in the base cost associated with mass produced rods, it is not a big deal for the manufacturer to warranty them, even multiple times. As a result nothing will change in their basic lay up.

Not saying that by spending $200-$600 on a Sage, Loomis, Lamiglas, St. Croix or other premium brand would prevent breakage altogether, just add more peace of mind when a big fish is on line...

I conducted some experiments a couple years back in purchasing multiple foam handled crappie rods in 8' to 12' lengths/$20 - $30 price range, at the same time building a Forecast 1143 for under $50. The longest 12' Pflueger paired with a (childs), $19 Zebco underspin and stock/loaded 10# line yarded chums without issue. The other two shorter Shakespeares folded in multiple spots humpy fishing last year, each on the first fish.
The Forecast lasted an entire Summer/early Fall season, landing many steelhead, kings and silvers without fail, until the tip was broken off hiking through the woods.

Conclusion was that some low cost rods will handle heavy use and abuse, while others fail on their first outing... and by spending just $20 extra a full trouble free season can be achieved with an "effective fishing tool", versus an "ineffective folder".

What does all this have to do with SST's? Nothing, as I've never even fished one... just had too much coffee this morning and had to release some mental energy!
