One of the gals at work fiddled around with a photo in a text message trying to figure out how to download it to the computer as a jpeg (or jpg...not sure). She finally got it, but since I don't have an iphone, I'm of no help, except to say that it can be done. I believe it had something to do with the "send message as" option.
