It is a interesting bit of case law for the average person to follow. Sifting through the BS from all sides two things sorta seemed to rise to the top for me. One it was a reach to use the interstate commerce clause of the constitution. Second when putting the thing through congress the Presidents supporters said the mandate was not a tax, but now the same people say it is a tax. ( to dodge the commerce thing in courts )

Still say a single pay was a better thing if one could choose the coverage they want. One thing about it is it ain't going away, the mandate to buy will likely get tossed, the system as it is is broke, so they got to fix it.
