This is my first time to post. I've been lurking for a couple of months. So here it goes.
Probably the reason you were seeing so much activity in the shallows was because we were in a full moon phase. Over the years I have keep records of the bass activity and the full moon does have a lot of influence to trigger spawning even with the water temp still a little low they will still go thru the motions ( kind of of like foreplay). I have also found that the period just before the fullmoon and shortly after can be sometimes the best fishing, But other influences can affect this such as weather and activity on the lake. I would suggest you plan another trip on the next new moon and the next full moon period as this usally are prime to fish. I'm not an expert just experinced.
