I was living in Montana last year and they were having a big row just when I was moving over here because it had been uncovered that the “wolf” folks were caught falsifying the wolf kill numbers. Wolves were taking elk calves as they were being dropped. The corrected figures were around 60% of the Elk calves were being taken by wolves. There was discussion of wiping out some of the packs completely. Wolves are not primarily rodent eaters, they take big game. They do not just go after the sick, they are opportunists and take what is handy. If you ever have a chance to see a pack of coyote’s or wolves work to make a kill it is a little spooky. They are a killing machine, and a very efficient one. I saw a black wolf in the Potholes in Eastern Washington two years ago and reported it to the Fish and Game. It was the third report they had of it. I was told that a female wolf that was being tracked crossed from Montana into Washington in one weekend! About eighty miles distance where they figure it came over. Ask any outfitter about wolves and the number of kills they make. Hollywood has put so much garbage out for people who do not know the woods to believe it is almost comical if it wasn’t so pathetic and sad. Plenty of bear and cougar here in Washington. ‘Course you can’t just drive down the road and see them, which is what some people want methinks!
