Russ,
I fish the Cowlitz with a sled a lot during the summer and like to use a fixed lead as you have to get down fast in some of the holes and a sliding weight floats more. When you become more in-tune with the river and the area you are fishing then try a sliding weight. The last couple of years I have been useing slinky lead in surgical tubing, try it you will like it. If you decide to go with just lead get yourself a pair of pliers with a small punch on the jaws to put a hole in your piece of lead then you dont need tubing. Sportco has the pliers ask for John at the fishing counter. Good Luck Also a lot of people make the mistake when free drifting from a sled, that they think they have to have constant contact with the bottom, you only have to tuch every few feet to be very effective to much lead means more snags.
