Fish on - I saw this old post w/out a response and thought I would throw you a line.

Look for the Chinooks in late August to early Sept. in the lower river. Chinooks will end up at the Kalama River hatchery so they stack up at Beginners Hole. After 8/31, it's fly gear only between the pipeline and the hatchery. Cohos will begin to show in early to mid Sept with another surge in early October depending on the rains.

On a related note, I checked the Corps of Engineers fish counts at Bonneville Dam for 8/13/00. The Chinooks numbers are increasing and the first of the cohos are showing up. If they're upstream as far as Bonneville already, they're probably already in the lower Columbia tribs, including the Cowlitz and Kalama. Look for them. This could be an excellent year.....
