I have a Streamlight Scorpion, about 7 years old. It has held up to TONS of abuse. CR123 batteries. My go to light. It is available for less than $50. Batteries are expensive but you can find 12-24 packs online for less. Streamlight also sells 12 packs for about $20. Duracel run about $5 for 2.

Another great inexpensive LED lights is the rugged light made by Rayovac. Home Depot is where I got mine. $16 and it takes AA's, which is a huge plus.
