The Speaker is elected by the whole House, but there is usually consensus by the majority party making the selection fait accompli...
I don't think that the Dems need to throw their support to the biggest fruitcake the Reps put up so they will self-immolate...the GOP started that process themselves several cycles ago when they abandoned several sectors of the American public and embraced the lunatic religious fundamentalists... those fruitcakes are on their way to consuming the GOP and immolating it already, only they want to take the whole country down with them.
When Paul Ryan used words like "unify" and "party of proposition instead of opposition" he wrote off the all important "fruitcake support" he will need to get elected, so either he will have to go back on his word, or the Fruitcake Caucus will have to back down, neither of which I see happening.
The best for the GOP would be to face down the lunatics and drum them out of the party, but they have known this for years and have chosen short term election wins over long term good of the party and the country all that time, not sure why they would change now when they have both houses of Congress.
Fish on...
