Looking at new electronics and wondering if my FF screen is going to be all gooped up and finger printy/hard to read half way through the day.

For you that have touch screen technology, how's it working for you?

Thanks,

Mike

As long as you rinse your hands after cutting herring, handling salmon, or eating greasy crap it shouldn't be a problem. I wash them after any of the above to keep my reels, downriggers, etc. clean as well. Haven't had an issue with Lowrance touch screen with fingerprints or normal hand dirt. It's handy not to have to cycle through non-touch screen technology. Bob R

I am less fastidious than bobrr and consequently HATED the touchscreen. When I rinsed hands in the Sound, had lots of salt on the screen. Went back to buttons on my new Garmin and couldn't be happier.

I use the washdown pump in salt water, dry my hands, don't have salt on the screen. 2 trips in the salt this year on our boat, haven't cleaned the screen, no salt noticeable. I have had to clean boat, flush motors, clean rods and reels,etc.etc.

Get a computer screen cover, the thin sheet kind. Cut to fit, but make it a 1/4" long. Easier to wipe down, replace as necessary. Tuck the top edge up tight, and run the bottom lower than the screen bottom by 1/4" so water/guts don't get trapped in the lower corner, but instead run down below the screen and drip off.

I like mine but don't monkey with the buttons very often.

And yes, I have Herring slime all over the place.

Lowrance Carbon.

I was worried about it too, but went all in two years ago on Garmin GPSmap 7612xsv MFD. I could not be happier, have not had any problem. I do OK keeping my hands clean, but in the rare event a smudge ends up on the screen in the wrong spot, I use a screen wipe and touch it up quickly. I end up doing that like once every 25 trips or so.

For me, after 2 years, it's a no-brainer, the ease of use of the touch screen outweighs the drawback.

Touch screen is way better than punching buttons. To be honest I did not like gumming up the buttons anymore than the screen and screen is easier to clean. My screen is 10 in and I do notice that the smaller screen I had was a bit more of a pain to keep clean. All about not being a slob I think.

I also use two Garmin 7612 xsv, and also could not be happier. Great setups, and the touch screens are great to use except when running, sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge when you are bouncing around.

For me they provide super quick zoom and pan on both charts and Sonar. I havent had any issues with the screen getting scratched in a year.

Thank you all for the replies. I soon found out that if I wanted 9" screen that was compatible with my Garmin RADAR, I was forced into touch screen anyway. No other way around it, unless I went outside my budget.

So, it's the 942xs in the mail as of today. hello

I have to agree the refresh rate for pan/zoom with the new screens is incredibly fast. The old Garmin 4208 isn't supported anymore or I'd keep it. It's got a software bug unable to fix, plus wear and tear and a bumped transducer means it's time to upgrade.

Thanks.

Mike
