The Humptulips once well known for its steelhead now has acceptable runs of winter steelhead. You are wasting your time in the summer. Most of the bank access is difficult to find but the hatchery is a good start. follow the signs from highway 101 approx 30 miles north of hoquiam.

Shawn,

Thanks for the tip. When our rivers come down and the nets are not out I'll try and make a trip out there for winter fish.

Steelnerves,

You won't see many winter steelhead anglers flyfishing the Humptulips. In my opinion, the Hump just doesn't have the stream channel morphology that favors winter fly fishing with the wet fly swing. True, there are a few spots, but it's generally better suited to pulling plugs, which is what you'll mostly see. If I was determined to fish this river for winter steelhead, I'd try the floating line, weighted fly, and floating indicator thingy. That technique, which I'm not experienced at, would best position the fly in the holding water, like fishing with a bobber and jig, compared to using a sink tip and wet fly swing.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.
