i was just wondering if anyone has used a fly and rigged it up like you do for drift fishing for summerrun steelhead? confused

Yes and it works. You can even use just plain simple yarn too. The big problem is snagging up and losing that $2.00 fly.

That is how some of the locals fish the Russian and Kenai Rivers in Alaska.

In most places in Oregon, it's the one 'legal' way to "drift fish" in fly fishing only waters. You can use a float and mono line, but no added weight to the line under the float. But given you can weight the heck out of the flys, it's not necessary.

As noted above, an extreamly effective way of doing business.

I tie up a "driftfly/jig" on a #2 Gami Globug hook. I usually just use some chenille, marabou and krystal flash. I'll tie them to match my favorite jig colors. This is basically a cheap and easy to tie fly. If I loose them it's no big deal.

I'll fish them with a light 4-5ft. leader and 3/16th pencil lead. When fished properly they are very effective for any steelhead...
