Hi my birthday is coming and I am asking my father for a fly fishing setup to go out and catch steelhead and other salmon species.

I would like some ideas on decent setups (rod, reel, line, backing ext) for around 250-300$) ty

I am just learning about fly fishing btw

If you are just learning to fly fish I would suggest getting an 8 wt fly rod and reel combo from Cabela's. It will be a cabelas rod and a Pfluger reel. It also comes with backing and floating line. You can get them on the Cabela's web site.

Sage LE 890-4...$185 (the 4 piece is a better caster then the slightly less expensive 2 piece)

Pleuger Medalist 1595 1/2...$39.95

...and the most important part of your set-up, Rio Versitip #8...$115

The comes out to a little over $300 for the entire setup but you will be good to go to chase after them steelies... wink

I would go to the Outdoor Emporium and get a W.W.Grigg IM7 #7 or 8 fly rod ($60), an Okuma Integrity 8/9 fly reel ($53.99), 100 yards of Cortland Micron #20 backing ($10), and a Scientific Anglers Ultra 3 sink tip (38.99), sink rate 4 or 5. and I would get 2 or 3, 6 or 7.5 foot leaders that grade to 0x or 1x ($7.50).
That's a grand total of $110.48, and it is a setup I am still happy that I bought 4 years ago.
