Just out of curiousity, any of you "Old Timers" know if there was ever a hatchery on Hatchery Creek, the one that runs into the Sauk at Bennetville? Have driven by hundreds of times, always wondered.

OTS,

The Smith report, 1921, lists most of the streams that Bureau of Commercial Fisheries installed wiers for egg taking stations in the early years. They might have had an egg incubation station on hatchery creek briefly, but most of the eggs were taken to Silver Creek (Baker Lake) or Grandy Creek, depending on the years they were operated.

I'll try to look it up next week.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

I was wrong about a Hatchery Facility on the Sauk River; they had egg taking station (weirs, Like Salmo g wrote about) on the Sauk but no Full Hatchery Facility as we know of today.

Just going to have to wait to see what Salmo g digs up.

Thanks guys. Not a killer issue, just always kind of wondered. Often amazing to me the volume of history that just kind of fades away.

And now without any kind of collection point, like a hatchery or rearing facility, the hatchery plants in the Sauk are left in the river to spawn. rolleyes

Anyone know of another way to get into the runs above Hatchery Creek on foot? The last time I drove by I saw that the number of NO TRSPASSING signs at the pull off had increased and the whole area was cordoned off with yellow tape.

Doesn't that area belong to the Sauk/Suattle tribe.
