so for the past few years i have been interested in flie fishing. i've done it a couple times for salmon and it was really fun. but now i think i want to get my own gear instead of using friends gear. basicly i would only being doing it for salmon and steelhead. so what are my options on rods and reals. i'm looking to spend about 500 total on rod, reel, line, i tie my own flies already.

thanks alot

I have a Sage DS2 8 weight with a Tioga reel with 2 spools. 1 spool has a custom built Skagit style shooting head line w/tips and the other has a WF floater. I will sell it for $400.00 Great starter outfit for salmon/steelhead.

Thought I might weigh in on this one. The DS2 Sage is an excellent starter rod. If you plan on using this in salt take very good care to clean it every time out. Not to worry, if you end up liking fly fishing you will soon own many rods, lines, reels, and spools, it is just the nature of the sport.

I'd look into Kerry's offer above.

But aside from that, I'd look inot TFO rods. Best price vs quality you'll find.

For reels, i like Pflueger Medalists in the rim control model. At around $30, you can't go wrong. They last forever and have been the reel of choice for many veteran fly fishers for decades.

For under $300, you can have a quality outfit that should last you many good fishing years if you go TFO and Medalist. Spend a few extra bucks on a good line or even a couple of lines (put the second line on another $30 medalist).

Homey,

Who is that guy in your avatar? Did you lose about 200 pounds since the last time I talked to you?

On a more serious note did you hear about M&M?

Hi All, thought i might drop a river report in at the tail of this thread. Hit the NF Stilly Sunday afternoon for about 4 hours. It is chock full of Silvers, they are not very bright but they fight like heck and fun to catch, hooked several and landed a few all dark with one about 12 lbs the biggest. Floating line, sinking black beadhead bugger cast into the frog waters and dead drifted.

Saw one chrome bright steelhead that 2 guys snuck out with after pitching their spinning rods behind them up into the brush as I arrived across the river from them... they left shortly after! raining hard when I left but the water looked sweet above Deer creek... finally some snow in the hills too. Well you can blame the state for that misprint in the regs. Not everybody uses a computer to see what has changed. Maybe if they did a proof read on this thing(regs) these mistakes wouldn't happen.

Most people read it and then check the WDFW site to make sure where they are fishing at. Some think because of the misprint that they can get away with it.

I agree some people truly don't know, but these guys knew what they were doing because the rods had disappeared before I even had a chance to say "hi" and the fish remained "below" the brush line as they were slinking away. It is a pretty common thing up there and enforcement is sporadic. I will often come into a hole first thing in the morning and find empty shrimp containers, egg remnants, spinners hanging in trees, and etc.

Best one i can think of was earlier this year (Summer)when I told some folks it was flyfishing only so he took a fly reel out of his tackle box put it on his spinning rod and continued casting spoons to the Kings that had taken up residence in a big deep hole. frustrating and what I should add is it was surprising how bright this fish was... kinda odd for october.
