Fished the area from Docs, Fox Island, McNeil and surrounding areas from a boat on Sunday. Morning was overcast and no wind, perfect conditions with a big tide change. I have never seen so much bait in the sound. We were not finding many fish feeding. Hoping to find some Blackmouth around Fox. We were cruising along a shoreline when the water literally exploded. Krill were busting out of the surface with 3" perch in hot pursuit. All of a sudden, a chrome Coho busted up behind the perch. We followed the school for 45 minutes as they slashed trough the feeding perch. I had a nice fish follow my Shock and Awe tube to within a foot of my rod tip. As it opened its mouth just under the surface, it saw me and bolted. Roger was albe to hook a nice bright fish and played it for several minutes before it threw the hook on a nice run. We were fishing a shallow mud bay for flounder when we both hooked nice Coastal Cutthroat. Throw everything you "know" about Cutthroat habitat out. We were on a shallow mud flat in bright sunshine when these two hit.
A great day on Puget Sound. The bait should result in some very nice sized Salmon this summer and fall. I am counting the days.
Steve

So, when are we going fishing? We were on the lookout for kings but none sighted this weekend. I am psyched for these bad boys. Glad you had a good morning. S

man we were in the Kings tonight... I hooked one briefly... probably flossed as he swam through the school of shrimp he was eating, but a huge fish. Saw numerous fish pushing 20 pounds if not bigger. Too bad i have to run so far south to get to them... not like later in the summer when they are in my lap smile

Have you tried the shrimp pattern The Horner Brown Shrimp? It is tied by Dan Blanton and it is listed under Hot Flies on his web site at:
http://www.danblanton.com/brshrimp.html

I have fished this pattern alot in Puget Sound and it is great for Coastal Cutthroat. Les Johnson originally recommended it to me and he fishes it as well.

It might not hurt to have some in your box the next time the Kings are dialed on on shrimp.

havent seen that pattern...

didnt hook the big guys today due to the chop. tried for a while to stay in touch with the surfacing fish, but it was tough to see them in the waves.
Went and caught some nice cutties instead so all was not lost.
