I'm heading to the Ronde in a couple weeks and was wondering what types of flies and methods I should use to try and get into a Steelhead. I have only caught one Steelhead on a fly in my life and plan on making an attempt at it again. Any help would be appreciated.

Unless the weather is really freezing, and the water temp is below 48 F., a floating line and a size 6 or 8 Spade is all it takes to hook a Ronde steelhead. Just in case, tho, I'd also have a dry Grease Liner, October Caddis, Bomber, or somesuch to wake across steelhead lies. They come to dries better than wets on some days.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Small and dark was what we were catching them on for the last 2+ weeks. Purple Peril, GBS, skunks and all the other classics in sizes 2-6 were all worth fishing. In my mind it doesnt much matter what fly you put in front of them, as long as its purple or black. Egg-sucking leeches also work well.
For dries i used a dark foam backed bug in a size 6 or a steelhead caddis in a size 4.

Where would be the best pplace to start fishing on the Ronde now? I fish it in late March or early April above Boggans to the Oregon border.

there are fish spread throughout the system. How it fishes depends on whether or not a good push is moving through at that time in the water you are fishing... anywhere from the mouth to above Troy will have fish right now. There was a nice push moving past Boggan's from the 29th-4th

Just got back after four days. Fishing was slow in our camp. Averaged a fish per day of fishing hard. Floating line is all you need now.
