One of my kids has a free day tomorrow (sadly, that can be rare on a Saturday), and I suddenly feel like a little adventure.

Not trying to burn someone's secret spot, but anyone know of a lake with trout that doesn't have any development on it, and preferably even requires a portage of up to half a mile? I have a lightweight canoe, easy to carry on my shoulders, although bushwhacking with it gets tricky.

I'd travel up to an hour or two from the metro. Most spots I know like this are too high of elevation for late April. Doesn't need to be killer fishing, more of a fun adventure.

This is also a pretty easy way to send me on a wild goose chase through the woods with a canoe, if one is so inclined.

Olympic National Park on the westside has several small wilderness like lakes. Also Olympic National Forest. This Saturday (tomorrow) is the opening day for most. Check the regulations.

Wish I still ha my two Eastside of Olympics high lakes reports that Jim Johnston did. Lots of interesting lakes from rather low to high up. Used to go to Flat Lake, up the Skok, that was full of dumb brookies. Need to go back and see what has changed in 40 years. Price Lake might be a walk-in option and it is low enough to not be iced at all.

Across from Carney lake in Kitsap county there is a fairly easy 1 to 1.5 mile trail into Lake Koeneman. It has been years since I fished it, but at the time it was catch and release with selective fish rules. It used to be full of 15 to 18 inch trout. Tossing a black panther martin was very effective. I only have hiked in 5 to 6 times, but only twice was anyone there. One time there were some bug tossers who were striking out and the other time I just saw the butts of some skinny dippers making a quick exit as they did not think anyone else would be there. Feels like an alpine lake but is a fairly quick drive and an easy hike. Warms up quickly in the summer, so it could be a good swimming lake. It would be a great spot for a quick over nighter. I am not sure it that is allowed, but with the super low pressure I doubt anyone would even know or care.

I am not sure of the fishing rules or if it is still stocked, but there is a creek that accesses it so there should be some native trout if nothing else. You can find some info. on the state web site.
Good luck.
