Catcher1, the Gulkana river is a good bet in June for kings. Average 25lbs. Large kings run 50-60lbs. Drift fishing w/20lb main, 30lb leader, large corkies and eggs. You might see if you can rent a avon raft from U-haul in Anchorage and float the river. It's a real blast fishing in the land of sun until midnight, Good fishing, PFunk

I guided on the Gulkana and Klutina River's in 98'. Where to fish can vary w/ the river conditions. If the water is high you have to get to tributaries via jet boat on the Gulkana. If low you can float it or hike to the mouth. Below the hwy bridge is no bait area. Puff balls here work excellent.
The Klutina is a heavy heavy gear river due to it fast flow, mediuam size red w/ black wing spinning drift bobber and eggs in spawn sacks with 5" pencil lead and 60# leader are good.

A little heavier gear than for the 'Bows in the Gallatin . If you are banking it up north for Kings, I suggest using 40 lb. superbraid Tuf Line for main line. Lots of guys on the Kenai, and I guess the Gulkana, use the 60 lb. leader, but I find it tough to tie knots in that heavy of stiff mono. I started using 40 lb. Maxima Chameleon with few probs landing big Kings, even when hooked deep with the leader rubbing on their teeth. But maybe I've just been lucky. I like the 40/40 setup for up north. - RT
